Chapter Three
Classes began the next morning, and unlike a normal school, the students at Rolestone threw themselves into their studies from the first moment. They were, after all, competing with a cohort who would eventually end up being their competitors and rivals in the business world.
Gabrielle breezed through Political Sciences, Modern History, Economics and Statistics, before finishing for the day. Most of the curriculum had already been covered by the tutor her father had hired for her over the holiday, so class was merely a revision for her.
She'd already finished the week's work her father had sent her, so essentially had the afternoon to herself. Not content to sit idly in her room, she changed into gym gear and left her dorm.
She ran for about an hour, around a path through the forest she'd discovered during her first year. Breathless and panting, Gabrielle walked to the edge of the river and lay down on the soft grass, closing her eyes and enjoying the sound of the rushing water.
Suddenly, the sun on her face disappeared, as she felt a dark shadow loom over her.
"What are you doing?" A disembodied voice sneered. Gabrielle opened her eyes and sat up, swivelling around to see none other than Silas Strafford standing behind her.
Gabrielle raised an eyebrow at him, and stared at him through narrowed eyes.
When she didn't reply, Silas took a step closer and stared back, taking a drag from the cigarette hanging out of his mouth. "Montgomery, right?"
She nodded curtly. "And you are?"
Silas barked out a laugh. "Bullshit you don't know who I am," he challenged.
Gabrielle shrugged, "I have much more important things to worry about."
Silas looked at her for a second, unconvinced. "You're kind of a bitch."
"Can I help you with something?" Gabrielle spat, annoyance leaking into her voice. Her hostility surprised even herself.
"No."
"Leave then? Don't you have anyone else to torment?"
He shot her an evil grin, turned and left. She watched him walk off, wondering what he was doing out here alone. Although she was smug to find out that she was right - those boys were assholes who didn't deserve a second of her time.
