Chapter Twelve
Later that day, Gabrielle returned the crumpled contract, adorned with her signature, to the lawyers who waited oh so patiently in that damned meeting room. Effectively having signed her life away to the devil, it was suffice to say that she was in a horrible mood. Worse that before even.
She skipped class, trying to run off the aggression on the paths in the woods. Hours of that didn't calm her down.
"I need your keys."
Imogen, startled, looked up at the girl who had just burst into her room.
"You should really knock. Never know what I'll be doing in here," she said slyly.
"Keys, Imogen." Gabrielle was in no mood for Imogen's antics.
"What is wrong with you? You've been in a terrible mood for days. It's really bringing me down."
"Imogen, if you don't give me your keys right now, I am going to break something. I have too much pent up anger to even talk to you right now." She seethed, hands clenched into fists by her side.
Imogen's eyes widened slightly, and she silently threw Gabrielle the keys, looking slightly wounded.
"Are you okay? Did I do something? Is it James? I'll stop flirting-"
"No, it's not you," Gabrielle sighed, softening slightly. "I just... I'll explain later. I need to go."
Gabrielle drove so fast she was surprised she didn't crash or get pulled over. She drove for a long time, eventually stopping in the middle of nowhere, three towns over. Alone on a dusty country road, Gabrielle turned off the car and slammed the wheel. She screamed and cursed and damned her father, Jasper, the lawyers... She yelled until her screams turned into sobs.
That felt better.
Then she started laughing. Hysterically. Look at me, she thought, pathetic.
Furiously wiping the tears off her face, she pulled her mirror down and stared into the reflection of her piercing eyes.
Pull yourself the hell together.
She was not a cryer. Since a young age she knew that crying would not fix her problems.
Nothing would fix something like this. It was as cemented into her future now as her taking over her father's role and working till the day she dies.
Simple as that. There was nothing she could do to change this, except one thing -
Suck it up.
Vowing to stop acting like a pathetic child, Gabrielle cleared her mind and tried to throw out some of the anger. Life would be hell if she was so angry all the time.
There was simply nothing she could do but accept the fact that she, Gabrielle Montgomery, was now supposedly hopelessly in love with Jasper Thornton.
--
"What were you doing with her?" Asher sneered, as Jasper sat back down at the table.
Jasper rose an eyebrow, but didn't grace him with a response.
"She's such a whore. Thinks she's so bloody perfect with her-"
"One more word and you will never be able to move again." Jasper seethed, throwing his meanest glare at his friend.
Asher's eyes widened and he visibly gulped. Silas shot him a look, knowing that egging on Jasper was no good for anyone. That boy had a temper and a half.
