A small smile is sometimes all it takes
I took a deep breath, and stepped through the doors into my new school. A cool October breeze followed me like a sentinel, causing several faces to turn and glare.

"Hi," I said tentatively to the inquisitive faces.

One face detached itself from the mass and approached me. I looked down slowly and stepped off to the side and continued down the hall trying to ignore the stares that permeated my conscious.

I looked down at the slip of paper the woman from the office had handed me, Locker #539. I did a half turn and bumped into someone.

"I'm so sorry!" I said helping the girl up from the floor.

She dusted herself off, and gave me a small glare. " Open your eyes maybe you'd notice more."

" I tried that one, it wasn't very fun," I said with a grin, I held her a second more. " Do I know you?"

Deep chocolate brown eyes studied me.

" I don't think so," she shrugged. " Why are you speaking to me?"

"Why shouldn't I?"

She gave me the barest hint of a smile," No one does."

I shrugged, " I'm not one to conform to societal expectations."

" Show off," she said backhandedly and walked off.

I stood there shaking my head slowly, and got what books I needed from my locker and walked off to find my first class.

"Excuse me, can you help me?" I asked a short boy in glasses walking down the hall.

He jumped slightly," Sure! my names Jack. Your new aren't you? What can I do for you?"

I laughed at his rapid fire questions," My names Joshua, and I need to get to first period English class, please."

Despite his helpful instructions I still managed to arrive 5 minutes late to class, go me.

The teacher glared at me as I walked in," Joshua Redmond I presume."

" Yes sir." I said to his shoes.

He continued to glare at me,"Take a seat in the back, and don't make a habit of arriving late to class please."

I trudged to the back of the classroom and was about to take the only available seat, when I stopped short.

It was her, I was sure of it. I slowly took my seat next to her.

I took a deep breath and said," Hi, I'm Fitz. Looks like I'll be spending the rest of the year next to you."
