gender neutral pronouns[au in which everything is black and white until you meet your soulmate,]

you walked through the crowded swarm of people that littered the streets as you headed home, hands jammed in your pockets and eyes casted downward to the bland, grey sidewalk, black shoes occasionally dotting your line of sight.
you followed the same routine everyday; walk through the bustling crowd of different shades of black, grey and white as you walked home, eyes only following the small dots of grey splattered in the sidewalk cement since, according to your mother, the sidewalk was actually grey. so you thought that as long as you don't look up to face the monotones, you could make yourself believe everything had colour.
but today, something happened to break your routine. or rather, someone.
you collided head-on with a rushing stranger, making you stumble backwards while the opposite dropped a case of some sort, which lead to the case popping open which, of course, lead several sheets of white paper to scatter across the grey concrete and send some soaring into the blue sky.
"i'm so sor—"
blue.
you didn't particularly know what the colour looked like, but you knew it well enough by how your mother described it to you when you were younger, and you positively certain that the sky was indeed blue.
a smile crossed your face as you realized blue wasn't the only colour you could see now; various shades of reds, greens, yellows and purples made themselves visible ever since you bumped into that stranger.
that stranger.
you directed your attention back to the person who was scrambling all over the place to get the papers back in their container, muttering very hateful comments under their breath.
"here," your voice was airy and content. "let me help."
you picked up a couple of stray sheets that landed a fair distance away and handed them to them, still smiling ridiculously.
the stranger, on the other hand, adorned a stoic, expressionless face, their slate grey eyes just as blank as they took the papers from your hands with a small, "thanks,"
they bowed slightly, gathered their belongings and was about to walk away when you spoke up.
"can't you see them?" they narrowed their eyes and pulled their eyebrows together.
"the colours! can't you see them?" you asked, your own eyebrows knitting together.
"what?" they looked around. "oh, yeah. listen, i'm terribly sorry, but i'm late enough for an audition as it is; i don't have all the time in the world to chat about colours." and with that they strode away, dispersing into the swarm of shades.
your eyes followed after them, slightly widening, before you snorted and carried on, taking in all the beautiful colours as you did so.
you closed your eyes an inhaled; exhaled, wanting to see the boring black behind you eyelids before opening them up to see the bright colours again.
but that didn't happen.
instead, you opened your eyes to be greeted by dull, fading colours. your breath hitched and your suddenly became very alert. you scanned the area where the stranger had disappeared and just about screamed when you spotted them.
they were lying in the middle of the street, limbs in directions they shouldn't be facing, grey eyes open wide, with a small puddle of crimson red, slowly fading to grey, surrounding them.
[however, when your soulmate dies, the world goes back to black and white.]
