the lack of warmth on the opposing side of the bed was what woke you during the early hours of morning. you groggily opened your eyes, vision hazy from sleep, and patted the space beside you, searching for the warmth. you frowned when you found nothing but cold blankets, wrinkled and folded back, which meant iwaizumi had gotten up a few hours ago.

you sighed and swung your legs over the edge of the bed, stepping lightly across the floorboards and down the stairs. you found him leaning against the kitchen counter, a mug of some hot beverage - coffee you assumed - held between his hands, eyes staring firmly at the countertop, mouth closed tightly in a straight line. the bags under his eyes were the thing you noticed most; his eyes dark and worn with the space underneath them even more so.

"hajime," said boy jumped at your voice. "why are you up so early?" your words barely sounded like real words, just sleepy breaths and extended syllables.

"i couldn't sleep," he murmured. "i'm sorry if I woke you up."

you rubbed your eyes with the back of your hand. "you didn't wake me up. but you know, caffeine isn't going to help you fall asleep; it'll most likely do the opposite."

he sighed rather heavily and ran a hand down his face. "i know." but he took another swig anyways.

you gave up and, without another word, made yourself some (tea, coffee, etc.), dragged him into the living room, set him down on the couch and sat down beside him.

"(f/n?)" iwaizumi asked as you reached for the television remote. "what are you doing?"

you flicked through several channels; there wasn't much on this early in the morning. "if you can't get to sleep, i'll stay up with you. at least then you'll have some company." you finally picked out a show you could both enjoy and snuggled closer to iwaizumi.

and so you stayed like that, hugged close to iwaizumi, his arm draped across your shoulders with the ghost of a smile adorning his features, while you stared at the television screen with half lidded eyes, the two of your completely content until the sun showed itself on the distant horizon.
