I never thought that I was going to make it out alive. I was surprised to see that behind the lid was Dovian, the nonchalant butler. Although, I do thank Dovian for saving me. If it wasn't for him, then surely, I would be dead. He reached out to pull me out of the coffin but I quickly snatched my arm away.
"Stay away!" I shouted.
Dovian held out his arms in front of him to show that he was innocent. "I apologise. I'm not here to harm you, Harrington."
"Don't lie to me. Is this one of Dravis's schemes?" I asked, whilst clumsily stepping out from the coffin. I knew that he was here to help me, but I was still uncertain. After being brainwashed and fooled by Roseangela and Dravis, I don't know who to trust anymore. He was a vampire after all and so did he have something else to hide?
"My allegiance does not lie with my brother," he replied boldy.
"Well I certainly do not trust you," I muttered.
Dovian held out his hand to reveal a rolled up scroll. "This is a map. I've picked out the safest route, which I hope, will lead you back to the human world."
I took the scroll, whilst releasing my backpack from my shoulders. I swung it around and as I was putting the scroll inside I asked him, "Why are you helping me?"
He looked at me calmly. "I don't want you to interfere what is about happen."
I tilted my head in confusion. "And what is that?"
"A war," he replied bluntly.
"A war?" I repeated. I began to fumble around in my backpack, trying to search for something.
"A few weeks ago, Dravis had declared war on lycans. He believes that they are gaining in numbers. Thus, he is preparing to attack them." His face dropped as if he was disturbed by this. "I disagree with his decision. I believe that a majority of lycans are not blood-thirsty. Only those who live in the past craved to kill. I think a peace treaty would be better instead, for both our kind's sake."
I looked at him, surprised that Dovian thinks of it this way. Never did I think that Dovian would consider forging an allegiance between two different species. However, I understood where he was coming from. "Can't you do something about it? Tell him to call off the war if you think of it like that," I said.
Dovian shook his head rather sadly. "I'm afraid not. I do not have the right to oppose. He had already convinced the council."
I nodded. "I see."
It is interesting that these creatures, vampires and lycans are going to have a war – something that I would like to see. It would be magnificent. Lycans and vampires, in this world there is more to it than I thought. But my time here needs to end. I am not fit nor have any purpose to be in a war. Dovian was right. I should leave, this war was not my concern.
I looked up at Dovian. "You know, I don't know much about you," I said.
Dovian gave a small smile, a smile which I had not seen before. "To tell you the truth, Dravis and I were born with different mothers. My mother was a slave and my father was his," he explained. "If I was born of the same mother as his, then things will be different."
Now I know why Dovian was in this position. All because his mother was a slave had given him no purpose, no place in this household. Even if he tried to fit in, his brother would punish him. Oh but I know that he despised it. He may look dull and obedient, but I know that he was trying to hold his feelings back. That smile he made, it was a bittersweet smile. And now that realised it, I quietly smiled to myself.
