Even in Lightning Thief, when Percy was being chased by the Minotaur, he could have left Grover to die, and run to Camp Half-Blood but he chose to face the Minotaur barehanded rather than watch his bestfriend die.

During the Battle of the Labyrinth, when Percy met his half-brother, Lord Antaeus, in the arena. Percy figured out how to stop him from regenerating by dangling him from chains!
Of course only a dimwit would fail to see the brilliance in this act.
