Jack POV

Can I describe how confused I was? RV...Chris.... together? Engaged? Christine sat right next to me and attempted to get my attention through the dinner. She gave up after a few minutes and continued to eat her dinner. What hasn't she told me? Does she love him? What was I thinking? I shake my head and scold.

"Jack?" I look to my right and find Chris staring at me with her big brown sad eyes. "Jack, I'm sorry. I should've told you. I just got so scared that you—" she looked around and whispered, "that you wouldn't accept me because of what has happened."

"Why would you think that? Chris, you know I love you," she looked down onto her lap and fiddled with her finger, "Chris?" she looks up at me, "do you still love him?"

Christine's eyes widened and she looked around and right when she was about she looks up to who tapped my shoulder. I turn to find Raoul behind me. "Would it be a problem to steal Lotte away for a while?"

"Why?" I tried not to sound as defensive but failed.

"Listen to me Jack, you're my oldest college mate. I wouldn't attempt anything on Christine because of you. You are my friend. I just want to do one thing."

"Why do you need Christine?" At this point I stood up and stood next to Chris.

"We're lacking two performances tonight. They suddenly decided it was okay to just leave the ball, leaving no note behind. I need a replacement. Christine, please, can you sing?"

"She doesn't sing Raoul," I took a defensive step towards him as Christine touches my arm.

Raoul looked like he was about to pass out of shock right there. "She doesn't sing? From where have you heard that? Christine, Christine Daaé does not sing? From when?" Raoul looks at Christine and I turn to see her reaction.

"What am I supposed to sing?" Christine avoids eye contact with me as she looks directly to Raoul.

"They will tell us onstage. The new conductor told me to say that there is to be no interruptions during the performances or changes. Unless he stops the performances they must continue on," Raoul puts his hand out and smiles, "come, we don't have much time, I promised I'd bring someone special."

Christine finally looks at me, "I'll explain everything later Jack. Jack?" I look at her, "I love you," with that she turns and walks ahead of Raoul as he drops his hand and follows.

Christine POV

I don't know what is going on but Raoul is making me angrier than I could ever be. I was glad to see that he was well. That he is safe, alive. But then he starts becoming affectionate to me in-front of Jack. Jack and Raoul then were friends in the past? Now he wants me to sing. I'm losing every chance of a future with Jack. A new start. My new start.

"Christine," Raoul holds my wrist as he stops walking.

I turn to face him, "What?" I snap.

"The staircase is this way."

"Is that where I'm performing? How am I supposed to go there without knowing the song?"

"It's an old one, trust me, you'll remember," I begin to walk ahead but Raoul steps in-front of me to block my way. "I'm sorry for the way I acted back there. I shouldn't have done that."

"What part Raoul? I'm happy to see that you are well. I was terrified that something happened to you after I left. But why did you do that? Jack isn't a bad person, he doesn't deserve to see this, any of it," I walk ahead and turn once more. "I wanted to start a new life Raoul. I wanted to forget about all this, about him, about all that has happened. Now I see you again and...and all I feel is pain," with simply that I walk through the door.

Unknown POV

Nadir is a genius. As the new composer of the Opera Populaire he and I planned out a two-minute plan to get my angel to see me again. She would be on the staircase once again and I would appear. All I need to do is get rid of that fool of the Vicomte. The two performers were simply too easy to get rid of. They were fooling around in the corridors of the backstage theatre. After they blacked out Nadir taped their mouths, feet and hands together. We hid them in a closet far east where they wouldn't be found. It's almost time. In no time I will have my Christine back with me.

Christine POV

I stood by the curtains that blocked the hallways leading to the staircase. The maids attended to me even though I kept insisting that I needed none. Raoul insisted that I change into a different dress that would be more comfortable to sing in. I kept refusing but he kept bringing up the fact that all the investors were here. He wanted to give a good impression therefore I complied. Raoul touches my arm as he passes by.

"Ready?" I gave him no response, before he could say something the orchestra began to play a tune. It was familiar but I couldn't depict where it was from. The curtains raised and Raoul turned to me, "Stay here until I come to get you," with that, he began to go down the staircase. Then it finally came to me.

I was actually doing this. I was finally singing after five years of silence. My heart was pounding hard against my rib cage. I stood in the shadows to not be noticed by the crowd. Was I excited or horrified?

"Little Lotte?" Raoul appeared and held his hand out. I reluctantly took it and stepped into the light in front of the crowd.
