(The next day)

The sun projected a soft beam through the windows, revealing a few specks of dust that were floating around, adding to the hazy morning atmosphere. Outside was a perfect view of the world. The time of day meant that most people were asleep, so the only sounds heard outside were the calming songs of many sparrows, and the occasional rustle as they flew from tree to tree. The cafe was quiet too, with only a few customers. Every now and then a clink of plates and mugs was heard, the drinks machine filling the room with a warm chocolate smell.

"I heard that"
"Shut up I'm hungry," Patrick cradled his empty stomach as Pete grinned at him, amused by his helpless attempt to hide the rumbles.
Finally the strawberry-blonde waitress came over to the band members for their order.
"What can I do for you, boys?"
Patrick fumbled with his fedora as he gave his order, soon followed by Pete. As the waiter left Pete noticed Patrick's half smile fade.
"What's wrong buddy?"
"What do you think?"
"Oh...your wife."
"Ex. She's not coming back, she made that clear" Patrick let out with a sigh, trying to hide the tremors in his voice. His eyes started to burn- any moment tears were sure to be streaming down his face.
"What did I do Pete? What did I do? I don't understand... She just..." Patrick trailed off as a single tear rolled down his cheek. Pete reached over and wiped it off his friend's cheek before it could fall.
"Nothing Patrick. Absolutely nothing" Pete replied hoarsely, his own voice cracking slightly on the last word.
Just as Patrick felt like he was going to choke with tears, the waitress arrived with the food. He quickly swallowed down his sadness and stretched out a small smile. Struggling to talk without sobbing, Patrick let his friend say "thank you" for him, and nodded at the waiter.
Pete took a bite out of his breakfast muffin which let out a strong scent of bacon, and looked at Patrick helplessly.
"You know I'm always here, you can always talk to me."
"Yes, thank you." Patrick looked down to his food, where not one bite was taken from it. "I just don't even know what to think right now" he mumbled, too full of consuming sadness to have much of a conversation.
"Patrick, look at me" Pete said gently. When Patrick did nothing, Pete gently pushed his friends head up slightly. He could see now why the musician had kept his head down all morning. Patrick's eyes were brimming with tears that were threatening to fall, his cute face now showing nothing but heartbreak and hopelessness.
"Why don't we get out of here, you can come stay round mine for a while?"
"That would be great, thank you" Patrick smiled sadly, getting up from the retro styled chairs. Pete gently grabbed his friend's arm before he could walk away.
"Patrick, listen. It's gonna get better. It's gonna work out" he said softly. Patrick shrugged off Pete's hand and reached for the breadsticks on the table, and put them in his pocket.
"I don't know Pete. I don't know" he said, half to himself.
"You're paying!" Patrick ordered, half running out the cafe. Pete sighed as he walked to the bar with his money.
