"It's almost sad. Everyone is burning and no one is watching. Well except for us." Emerald laughed and Mercury grinned. It was fun to watch things burn. Cinder walked over to Emerald, who was watching as Beacon burned. "What did you say?" Cinder asked, and Emerald looked at her, confused.

"I- I said it was sad." She said quietly, suddenly nervous. Cinder took a breath. Emerald watched her with a small feeling of fear.

"Emerald, do you care what happens to Beacon? Do you care if these people die?" Cinder asked. Emerald's back straightened. "No of course not." She said will confidence. Cinder thought for a moment. Finally, she pulled out a dagger and began to fiddle with it, twisting the tip against her palm.

"Emerald you were with me from the start, yes?"

"Yes." Emerald wondered where in the world Cinder was going with this.

"And because you were with me you understand how I think. How I feel about certain things. Yes?"

"Yeah, I guess." Emerald watched as Cinder slid the blade slowly along her fingers. Mercury was silent as all this happened.

"And you no doubt know that I am known to possess a certain... lack of sympathy for the poor fools I so choose to destroy." Cinder said as if this was common sense. Emerald nodded. Mercury looked somewhat lost but he quickly covered it. "Emerald, do you wish to be a student?" Cinder asked.

"WH- WHAT?" Emerald asked, trying to get over her shock.

"I don't like repeating myself. I said do you wish to be a student?" Cinder asked, colder than ice. Emerald looked at Mercury who looked as confused as she did.

"I- I don't know." Emerald said finally, feeling empty. Cinder's back was to her. Cinder was silent. Then--

"Well, maybe you should. You'll be joining them soon enough." Cinder said, spinning on her heel and stabbing Emerald in the stomach. Blood poured across the roof that they were standing on, and Emerald fell to her knees, crying in pain. Mercury shouted her name, but didn't run to her. He didn't run because Cinder had gotten there first.

"I'm so sorry Emerald. I forgot to tell you. I don't need you." Cinder hissed in her Emerald's ear. Emerald screamed, but her cries were cut short as she began to burn. And Cinder and Mercury just watched. Everyone just watched her burn. And the worst part was, no one did.
