Surprise!

"...anyway after being able to focus myself, the rest of art passed by in a flash; because I made the effort to never look up. I even waited to leave class after him." I concluded my day for Amber.

"So that's why you didn't shoot out of the building like a bullet."

"I do not." I say defensively "I just like being home. Home is nice." I say thinking of my bed.

"Lucky." Amber grumbled as she drove into the compound of my apartment. The school allows you to drive if you wish but only if you're the legal age, which is 18 in Kenya.

"Still fighting?" I ask, knowing she's talking about her parents.

"Even cats and dogs get along better than those two." She says in a flat tone.

"I'm sorry A; you know you're always welcome to come stay over." I say soothingly.

"Thanks D; I really hope they'll get through my senior year without a divorce though."

"Me too." I say jumping out of her shiny blue Subaru, Impreza. I'm more of a bike person, but I love Amber's car. It's like a fat bike. It's comfortable and built for speed, which gives it a deathly edge. "Are you coming up?" I ask as I close the door.

"No, not today. I've got a date." She says smirking.

"You've been back like five seconds and you already have a date?" I ask as she starts turning her car to drive out.

"You need to get out more D." She says driving past me.

"Text me!" I yell after her smiling.

"I will!" She yells back.

When I get to my front door I start trying to get my keys out of my bag. I succeed in getting them out and now I just need to put them in the keyhole and twist.

"Damien! You're home." Peachy says excitedly as she opens the door wide.

"You're home?" I ask puzzled. She never gets home before six, I think as I put my keys back in my bag. It takes like 3 minutes to get them out but like 1.3 seconds to put them back in. Life.

"Don't sound so shocked, I'm only about an hour early. Now come along, we have visitors." Peachy says as I follow her into the living room curiously.

"Who-" I start to ask.

"Hey kiddo," Avery says appearing from behind me as he ruffles my hair. Avery and Peachy work together. He's a really good lawyer, he's actually the one who helped Peachy adopt me, and he has the biggest crush on her. I honestly don't understand how they're not married yet.

"Hey Avery, what did we say about you touching my hair? I could sue you know? I know the best lawyer in town." I say grinning at one of my favourite people.

"You bet you do." He says chuckling.

"Damien meet-" Peachy starts when we get to the living room.

"You've got to be kidding me." I say looking at-

"-Xena and Xavier Bredford." After realizing what I said Peachy turns to me and asks, "Oh, you know them? Lovely, that makes the process shorter."

Xavier looks just as shocked to see me, until he starts smirking. Why is he smirking, at me, in my house?

"Why are they here?" I ask as politely as possible, staring at his smirking lips, still not understanding why he is in my house

"They're my new assignment. You remember how this works, right?" She asks me.

I snap out of my trance at the word assignment, "Yeah I do, but is this really a good idea?" I ask cautiously looking at my feet. I really need to take off my shoes.

Peachy works in the child protection service. Their work is basically to hold onto kids whose parent(s) are involved in sensitive cases that are being worked on, or in most cases whose parent(s) think they're in trouble and would like their child to be protected. In some cases they even relocate the kid(s) to an entirely different continent depending on the seriousness of the case, to try and help them continue with life. It's like a vacation with everyday life in it, like school, and chores and stuff. Sometimes they're lucky and they get to go home, but most of the time they grow out of the system, or whatever they were running from catches up to them.

"Everything will go right; it won't be like last time." She says without looking at me.

After a few seconds of silence, I look up at my surrounding and notice the other girl in the room. She must be the other twin, and they really do look strikingly alike. She has the same blue eyes as his, the same nose and even the colour of their lips is the same. Her hair is pulled into a bun and she's in a strapless, white dress that hugs her upper body until her waist, where it flares outward reaching her knees. She's in a pair of four inch, pink and yellow cloth wedges, which make her just about her brother's height; now that I compare them he really is quite tall. He's hair is a tousled mess, and he's dressed in a black shirt with the word Metallica written across his chest in white, a pair of ripped, black jeans, and a dark red pair of vans. He's actually almost dressed like me, I think almost smiling. As they stand side by side facing me I noticed that they obviously differ in their personal taste. She obviously has a sunnier personality or just likes brighter clothes. I guess we'll find out since they're moving in. I turn to Peachy as she starts talking.

"So anyway, this is my Daughter, Damien. Xena you're going to be sharing a room with her." Peachy continues where she left off, "Now that that's settled, Damien you get Xena settled and Avery and I will get Xavier settled."

"You make me sound like a handful." Xavier complains.

"But you are." Xena and I say in unison, and then burst into laughter.

"Hey! We've not even fully moved in and you're already ganging up on me?" Xavier fake whines.

By then the whole room is smiling and chuckling.

"I have a feeling we're going to be great friends Damien." Xena says walking towards me and looping her arm through mine.

"The feeling is mutual." I say leading the way to our room.

"I could barely handle living with one girl, but now they're two." Xavier says rubbing the temples of his head.

"Three actually, don't forget me." Peachy chirps, sending the whole room into a fit of giggles, even Xavier.
