Liam and Zayn are 16 and 15

The year 2505

----------

As the first crack of thunder broke of Brixham berry head, Liam Payne opened his eyes. A flash of sheet lightning broke behind the curtains. Shivering, he threw back the cover and walked over to the bedroom window. It had broken free and was wide open, beating in the wind like a glass wing.

Liam reached out to pull it back. It required some effort and the rain drenched him in the process, but he managed it. He fastened the window but left it slightly open - not wanting to entirely shut out the storm. It had a strange rough music with clashing of cymbals and too many drum rolls. It made his heart race from excitement as well as fear. The rainwater was icy cold on his face and neck and arms. It made his skin tingle.

Across the room, Zayn as still asleep. His mouth wide open, one arm plopping over the edge of his bunk. How could he sleep through such a racket? Perhaps his boyfriend had clean exhausted himself from playing around with Niall all afternoon. Beyond the lighthouse window, the cliffs were empty of ships. This was no night to be sailing out. The light house beam swept across the surface of the ocean illuminating the troubled waves. Liam smiled, thinking of his dad up above in the lamp room, watching over the harbour keeping everyone safe. Another sheet of lightning cracked and splintered outside the window. Stumbling back, Liam careered into Zayn's bed. Liam loved every little thing about Zayn. His black quaffed hair. How he's always so fresh and clean, the scent of his cologne and how he has a passion for art. Zayn's face suddenly crinkled and then he opened his eyes. He looked up at Liam with a combination of annoyance and confusion. Liam stared down at his dark chocolate eyes which were the same shade as his.

"Hey you're all wet!"

Liam realised that he was dripping rainwater into Zayn.

"There's a storm, come look!"

He grabbed Zayn's arm and pulled him out from under the bed covers, dragging him towards the window. He stood there rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, as another vein of lighting danced in front of them.

"Isn't it amazing, or should I say amazayn" Liam said

Zayn chuckled and nodded. Although he had lived his days in Liam's lighthouse because his parents abandoned him when he was 7. He had never got used to the raw power of the ocean - it's ability to change from a calm millpond one moment to a raging furnace the next.

"Let's go and see what your dads up to" Zayn said

"Good idea!"

Liam grabbed his robe from the bedroom door and wrapped himself up. Zayn pulled on a t-shirt and a hooded sweater. Together they raced out of their bedroom and climbed the spiral staircase up to the lamp room like the happy gay couple they are. As they made their way up, the noise of the storm grew louder. Zayn didn't like it one bit but he wasn't about to share that with Liam. His boyfriend was quite fearless. It was strange. Liam was as thin and bony as a rake - (well maybe not because he had rigged up muscles and an amazing six pack) but as tough as an old boot. Zayn was physically strong; but Liam had a steely mental strength that he had yet to gain. Perhaps he never would.

"Well hello there"

Said Liam's dad, as they emerged into the lamp room. He had a bright smile on his face as his son and his boyfriend came inside. He was accepting of Liam being gay and he also liked Zayn which was a bonus.

"Storm woke you guys up, didn't it?"

"No, Liam woke me up," Zayn said "

I was in the middle of a really good dream!"

"I don't understand how anyone can sleep through a storm like this" Liam said

"it's too noisy and too beautiful... Like you" Liam dragged on the u.

"Oh stop" Zayn blushed.

Liam's dad took a sip of his hot lemon tea and beckoned to them.

"Li, why don't you come over here and get a ringside seat for the show. Zayn, come sit by me."

The couple did as he said, squatting down on the floor on either side of him. Instantly Liam was fascinated, enjoying the chance to watch the raging bay from the highest vantage point. Zayn had a flash of vertigo but then he felt Liam's reassuring hand on his shoulder, sending waves of calm and relief through his body. Liam's dad took another sip of his tea.

"Who'd like to heat a shanty?" He asked

"Me!" Liam and Zayn shouted in unison

They both knew exactly what shanty he would sing. He'd sung it to both of them as for as long as they could remember, from the time when they were 8 or 9.

"This,"

He announced grandly - as if he hadn't done so a thousand times before -

"this is a shanty sung by people long before the new flood came and made the world so wet. This is a shanty about a ship that sails through the night, through eternity. A ship that carries a crew of dammed souls - the demons of the ocean. A ship that has been sailing since time began and will voyage on until the end of the world. . ."

Zayn trembled with anticipation. Liam smiled from ear to ear. His dad, the light house keeper began to sing. As his dad sang, Liam looked through the window at the cliffs below. The storm was still raging but he felt perfectly safe, looking down from such a height.

"Oh they say that the captain, he wears a veil

And his eyes never see the light"

Zayn watched as Liam's dad used his hand to mime a veil. He shivered at the thought of the captains horrible face.

The couple both looked out to the harbour half expecting to see a dark ship waiting for them there. Waiting to take them away from their home. But the bay was empty.

"I'll extend my prayer for thee -

That thine eyes never see a vampirate. . .

. . . And they never lay a hand on thee."

Liam and Zayn had known what was coming but still they jumped before bursting into giggles. Liam's dad enfolded them in a hug.

"Right can you please go to bed now?" He asked.

"Ok" Zayn said.

Liam could've watched the storm all night but he couldn't prevent a long yawn from escaping. They both made their way to their room and he turned the bedroom light off. Liam lay there, tired but too exhilarated to sleep. He looked over at Zayn, who once again was sprawled across his bed perhaps already back in the throes of his earlier dream. Liam closed his eyes and drifted off into a deep sleep. Dreaming of a vampirate ship sailing in the seas from yonder afar.
