The whole of berry head turned out for the lighthouse keeper's funeral. That day, not a single piece of black clothing was left to purchase at Brixham clothing emporium. Not one flower remained at the berry stem florist. Each and every bloom had been fashioned into wreaths and floral tributes. The largest of them was a tower of white and red roses in the shape of a lighthouse, surrounded by a swirling sea of eucalyptus. Geoff Payne had been a good man. As lighthouse keeper, he had played and important part in the safe - keeping of the bay. Many of those now standing around his grave, their bowed necks heating in the afternoon sun, owed their life to Geoff's keen eyes and even sharper sense of duty. Others had Geoff to thank for the safe passage of one or more family members or close friends, rescued from the dangerous waters beyond the harbour - waters teeming with sharks and pirates. . . And worse.

Berry head was the smallest of towns and each of its inhabitants seemed bound to the others as tightly as stitches in a piece of knitted cloth. Such a tight weave didn't necessarily make for cozy living. Gossip flowed faster through the town than the rapid waves smashing onto the sides of the cliffs at berry head. Right now for example, there was just one topic - What was to become of the couple Liam and Zayn. There they stood Liam's head bowed in front of his fathers grave and Zayn next to him trying to comfort him. 20 to 21 years old. Not quite teenagers, not quite mature adults - Liam tall and muscular with a rare intelligence, and Zayn already blessed with the body of an athlete. But truly they had few blessings to count, not now they were orphans - but for each other - all lone in the world.

No one in the town had ever caught sight of Liam's mother - Geoff's wife. Some doubted that a marriage had even taken place. All they knew was that one day, Geoff Payne left berry head with a madcap notion to see something of the world. And, one day - a year or so later - he returned with a heavy heart and a saddled parcel containing his only child, Liam Payne. No one in the town had ever seen Zayn's parents either. Rumour had it that he was only 7 when he was abandoned and left on the streets, then one day when Liam and his other friends, Harry, Louis and Niall went out to play they saw him. They took him home and Liam cared for him. Then they grew a bond, they were really good friends. Then suddenly Liam came out as gay and so did Zayn and Liam's father accepted both of them and made him a part of their family too. So today Zayn was just as sad as Liam because he too lost another thing in his life which made him happy. Family.
