It had been about thirty minutes since we had both lay down. I couldn’t tell whether or not Steven was asleep, his breathing was always so calm that it was hard to tell. I had tried closing my eyes, I needed sleep, but there was something that wouldn’t let me. I shifted my position on the bed, being careful not to hit Steven in the process. My plan failed as I elbowed him in the ribs. A small giggle escaped my lips and I quickly had to silence myself. Before I knew it Steven rolled over and had me pinned against the bed.
“Trying to beat me up in my sleep now are we?” he said grinning.
‘Well maybe I should go sleep on the floor, there would be more room then.” I started to move away from him but he quickly stopped me.
“You are not going anywhere. There is plenty of room, and if you don’t think so, I will be the one to move.”
“Why do you have to be so stubborn? You’re worse than a donkey.” I said pushing him away from me. He chuckled and flopped back down on his back, closing his eyes. I watched him, studying the way his face seemed so relaxed, the way he seemed like he could be himself now that we were alone.
“Why aren’t you asleep?” he asked suddenly, making me jump and look away.
“Umm..” I started, “I don’t really know… I guess I have a lot to think about. You know how your brain keeps you up sometimes.”
He opened his eyes again, rolling over to look at me. He rested his head on his hand and pulled the blankets over him a bit. Just watching him made me get butterflies in my stomach. I don’t know why he had such an effect on me. It was insane.
“Talk then.” I looked at him questionably. “Talk to me about what your brain won’t shut up about.”
“I can’t. You wouldn’t care anyways.” I avoided his gaze. If I didn’t look away from those gorgeous chocolate brown eyes I would be forced to comply.
“Look at me.” Without hesitation my head turned towards him and found those eyes once again. Dammit, I mentally screamed. Stupid me, there is no way I can get out of this now.
“I..I..” I started to say, trying to not let it all slip out.”
“You??” he questioned.
“I have to pee.” I stood up quickly and rushed over to the bathroom. I thanked the lord for letting me come up with that.
Once in the bathroom I looked at myself in the mirror. Man, I looked like crap. I was wearing no makeup, with my hair down in a rats nest. The tank top I was wearing had become twisted and my shorts were higher than they should be. I tried to fix myself a little before I turned on the cold water and splashed it on my face. I dried my face off before opening the bathroom door. I slowly made my way back to Stevens room, afraid of the things that may lie ahead of me.
When I got back Steven still lay in the same spot I left him in. He looked up at me when I came and lay back down. I avoided his gaze once again as I turned my back towards him.
“Hey, are you okay?” he asked. I didn’t answer.
I felt the bed move a little and then spring back up, only it was missing a weight. I started to wonder where Steven went but before I could wonder to much he had walked around the bed and was now sitting on the floor in front of me.
“I am not going to leave you alone until you tell me what is wrong.” He said, resting his chin in his palms and staring at me.
“You know I hate it when you stare.” I said.
“Really, I don’t recall.” He retorted.
I sneakily reached behind me and grabbed the pillow that he had left there. I swung it over me and let go, sending it flying into Stevens face. It hit him and he chuckled.
“Someone’s a little feisty.” Standing up he walked over to me. I saw it in his eyes before he did it. He grabbed me and started tickling me like there was no tomorrow. I laughed so hard, not able to breath. My limbs were flying in a whirlwind around me and I was surprised I haven’t hit him in the jaw yet.
Finally, he started to stop the tickling and I rolled over. He collapsed on the bed next to me, and I was reminded of the times when we would spend the summers like this. I immediately stopped laughing and closed my eyes. I wish things could go back to the way they were before. Opening my eyes I glanced over at Steven. He was watching me, just laying there watching me like it was completely normal. But this time there was something different in his eyes something that resembled….sadness.
“I..” he hesitated, “Do you remember when we used to spend days just hanging out like this?
I laid there, flabbergasted. I didn’t think that he would have remembered that, let alone brought it up in a conversation. I just simply nodded, not knowing how to respond. I gently pushed a piece of hair away from his eyes. There was no way I could keep doing this.
“Suzanna.” He said, “I think I made a mistake.”
