Two pieces of chicken and a handful of vegetables to share later I was still starving. Chewing the last precious pieces of meet I try to savory the minimal morsel. I have to make this up to Amelia somehow. It could not be easy to obtain such high-quality food.
"Where do we hide the box?" I ask wiping the grease on my three day old sweatpants. A horrible habit I picked up from the beloved prison guard Samuel. The squeak of a door opening to the left catches our attention before David could answer. Thinking on my feet I grab the now empty box and fit it securely behind the grungy toilet. That's the best hiding place were going to get.
"Hello Amelia." A low gravelly voice resonated through the quiet air. In a clink of keys, the cell opens silently and well oiled.
I move to the wall trying to get a glimpse of Amelia's company but was blocked. I stealthily dart to the opposite side for full view of him but completely exposed myself.
Standing in a guard's uniform, with brown cropped hair and a tattoo of Wile E. Coyote, stood who I presume is Erik. Despite the lip and brow piercing he looked, on different circumstances, like a friendly person. His eyes were too soft and amber and he lacked all the harsh features for his attempted freak look.
"Hello Erik." Her purr matched his as she willingly stepped outside of her cell. Holding out her wrist she willingly accepts the hand tied that would keep her from bolting. Amelia happened to look up smiling at the look of horror plastered across my face. She seemed completely unfazed by his company. Her interest in me caught the attention of Erik. I stumble back towards David hoping his strength would discourage the guard.
No such luck. Boots scrape the ground as he walks closer peering into the cell. Up close he really did look intimidating.
"You, Ginger Snaps. Come here." His gruff commanding voice sears my ears. Out of instinct David reaches back protectively holding me behind him.
"'Fraid I can't allow that mate." David fake Aussie accent is much appreciated after Erik's cold low tone. Erik pops his neck challenging David before casting a glance back at Amelia's disappointed scowl. Her gaze settles on me, in a scowl that made her scar flash menacingly. I cower behind David.
With her free fingers she gestures me to come forth. Taking a deep breath I step out of David's protection in fear of angering either one of them outside the bar. I stand a little taller mocking some unforeseen form of confidence.
"Ah, see. I knew you would come to your senses." I shiver at his patronizing tone but keep my head held high, doing what Amelia had gestured.
"May I help you?" I respond much more timid than I would have liked but it wasn't as If I did not already know what he wanted.
"How 'bout a trade?" He lingered on the last word for effect. I catch Amelia shaking her head from my peripherals.
"I'm afraid I have to decline." I flinch waiting for the worst that never came. I feel David watching from a few feet back ready to protect me if need be.
Instead Erik simply shrugged to Amelia's delight and the two of them went off to do God knows what. Taking a deep breath I allow David's embrace, keeping my hands low as to not disturb his invisible wings. I cling to him trying to calm down long enough to think clearly.
"We need to get out of here." his shirt muffles my voice. Releasing him I pace across the cell with the access adrenaline coursing through my veins. My overactive mind working in overdrive.
