CHAPTER 3

Thomas marched home after school in a dazed motion. Everything had happened so quickly he wasn't even sure if it was a dream or not. But a look at his classmate's stunned faces was enough to convince him it all had really happened.

The next few days were a blur. Thomas was the center of attention. He could hear people whispering when he wasn't listening, eyes staring at him everywhere he went. Even his friends acted differently around him; they looked at him as if he were a god, with eyes full of admiration- especially Ed, who knew everything about fistfights. He heard the Voice a few times, talking to him in his mind. It was always the same thing: the Voice saying his days were counted, his end was near. Always the same dramatic nonsense. But the thing that bothered Thomas more was that he felt different than usual. Almost like... something was inside him, growing and growing. Not a real thing, but a feeling. Something was worrying him. A bad feeling... Like something was going to happen- something big.

After school, Thomas went home with Ed and Nick again. They went up to his room. Thomas's mum was home. She shouted,

"Thomas! Get ready to go to the concert at seven o'clock! Get your friends to get dressed too!"

Thomas had forgotten the concert. They had planned to go there as a famous composer was in town. Thomas was allowed to bring his friends along- that was why they'd come over. They got dressed. Nick combed his hair while Ed examined himself in the mirror and Thomas put his socks on. Suddenly, Nick accidentally tripped over an object on the floor. He crashed into Ed, and then, something extremely bizarre happened that changed their lives forever.

The mirror Ed was checking himself in shimmered brightly. It blurred, like water when you drop a stone into it. Ed, who was pushed by Nick, tripped Thomas over, and all three of them fell- clean through the mirror.
