Emma was inside cooking while Harriet did the farm work and Isabelle was bringing in firewood. Isabelle was too young to do anything else. When Isabelle came back with the firewood she asked "Why did you come live here?" Harriet walked in "Yes, you never did tell me. All I heard on the day of your arrival is that I will be marrying someone named Emma." Harriet stared at Emma until she would respond "Well... In France there were so many young orphans who weren't married. So your King Louis the fourteenth had a solution, which was to pay us women to come live here. Then what I heard was the men were told to marry us." Emma left to go give the seigneur's a portion of her family's production as "rent."
