Nate woke up in the middle of the night, sweating and breathing heavily. He tried to inhale and exhale slowly and then walked to the bathroom to wash his face.
As if anxiety during day time wasn't already enough to deal with; now he also had constant nightmares because of it.
He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He was slowly turning into a monster, like the one who had destroyed his sister ten years before. He sighed.
No, that could not happen. He wasn't turning into a monster. He could still control his nervousness and his irrational thoughts. Or at least he believed he could.
He sat down on the floor and looked at the black and white tiles, drawing patterns with his fingers on the cold ground. He wanted to cry but he knew he couldn't. He was tired of being weak. He knew he had to be strong; if he didn't do it for himself, he would have to do it for his parents. Nate knew it would break their hearts if they found out their son was having the same problems that his sister had had in the past.
He closed his eyes. Everything was silent except for the sound of the rain pouring outside. He loved listening to it. It was something that was relaxing for him and calmed him down. If he could control the weather, he would make sure it would rain every single day.
He got up and returned to his bedroom. The clock beeped, announcing it was 5am. He knew he had to sleep or else he would fall asleep in school.
He heard a knock on the door.
"Nate?" He heard his mother call. His eyes widened. If he didn't make a sound, his mother would probably think he was asleep. But his mother wasn't stupid.
"Nate, is everything okay?" She called out again from the other side of the door.
He opened the door and saw his mother standing there, with her sleepy expression, rubbing her eyes and trying to hide a yawn with the back of her hand.
"Everything's fine. I just had to use the toilet. I'm going to bed again."
She nodded and turned around, ready to return to her bedroom. "Sleep well."
He half-smiled, knowing that that would be impossible.
