Chapter 3-
Jack: A helping hand
AUGUST 17th 2011
12:13 PM
Jack Overland sat at the edge of his tree house, in the doorway, with his feet dangling down, cutting through the fall air. It was a nice day, sunny but not too hot. 'A perfect day for baseball.' He thought, 'Maybe I should head back to the village and see if anyone wants to play.' He jumped down from the tree house, landing with a sturdy "Thump!" on the dirt and pine needle covered ground.
He started jogging, but he was busy thinking about things and not where he was going and suddenly he felt a large tug and realized that the cape of his brown coat had gotten entwined with a branch-y brush. "A-Ach!" He yelped as he tugged against the bush. He stopped pulling on his coat when he saw movement coming through some bushes. A girl plopped through and tripped, landing right on her face. Jack chucked a bit, and stayed silent, forgetting that the girl, more than likely, couldn't see him becuase of a bunch of trees that would block her view. She was very pretty, but seemed at first glance to much of a girlygirl for Jack to care for. She was wearing a pink and purple dress, carrying a fair sized suitcase and- 'Woah! Is- is that her hair?! The girl had golden blond hair that was a big mess at the moment, but VERY, very long. Jack realized pretty quickly the girl had a habit of talking to herself.
"Ow! Wha- what am I going to do with all this?" She sounded about 10 maybe 11 years old. She began trying to get her crazy hair out of the bush. "Hmm." After untangling, she sat on the ground, (which was a meadow with fresh grass and pretty little flowers here and there) and started braiding her hair.
She casually looked up. Jack gasped and tried to take a step back, but was stopped by two things. He was still caught on the bush, and some sensible thinking kicked in. 'Calm down, its not like she's going to be mad for any reason. ' He thought to himself.
"H- hi." The girl said cautiously.
Jack suddenly lost control of his speech, and said something that he regretted slightly, "Uhh...Hey. Are you talking to me?"
"Yeah, who else would I be talking too?" The girl laughed a little but she looked a bit confused. "Well," The girl stood up, "I'm kind of in a hurry so can I ask you something?"
Jack wondered for a second before remembering to answer her. "Sure." he said.
"Do you have any idea where a place called London is? Or what about Hogwarts?" The girl said those words slowly, as if she was saying them for the first time. She looked up at jack.
"Hogwarts? What kind of name is that? Well I personally haven't been anywhere outside this kingdom much... But I think London sounds like a big city somewhere. You could always ask one of the citizens in town...I'm sure one of them would know." Jack revealed more than he wanted the girl to know but really, whats the harm in helping her? He pointed her in the right direction, she said thanks and skipped off excitedly.
'Huh. I didnt catch her name...' he thought, before, Jack realized sadly that he was STILL caught on the branch. He continued to try and free himself, one time trying to get closer to see which way he should pull, only to get a twig in the eye. Frustrated, jack took one giant tug, and the next thing he knew, he swung back and fell off the branch but was off the branch "Finally!"
"I figured you could use some help."
Jack gasped and turned to face the new voice. Standing in front of him was a older women, wearing a Bright emerald green cloak, with a matching pointed hat. She also had what looked like an ordinary twig pointed at the spot where jack had just been. "Who are you?" Jack asked.
"I'm professor McGonagall. I'm a teacher at a school called Hogwarts." She answered in a calm, wise voice.
As soon as Jack heard the name 'Hogwarts' he was reminded of the conversation with the long haired girl. "Hogwarts?" Jack jumped up, "A girl just came by me and asked if I knew where Hogwarts was! I gotta go tell her!" And to his surprise professor McGonagall did not object, in fact she seemed pleased (not even surprised) as Jack ran into the woods in the direction of the town, searching for the alone, lost girl.
He found her in the center of the kingdom, now with a tiny owl on he shoulder, (that Jack was sure wasn't there when he talked to her) talking to family of all brown hair, and brown eyes, laughed with them, and shook another young boys hand, smiling sweetly. The boy had brown hair, was tall and had a mischievous look in his eyes. He was also wearing a blue vest. When Jack got closer he heard the girl say "Thanks Eugene! I really appreciate the help." She then looked around at the rest of the family, made up of 3 boys, 2 obviously younger then there brother Eugene, and their mother.
'Well...she looks happy. I hope they can tell her where London is.' He thought and then quickly ran back to the forest, to continue talking to professor McGonagall. She told jack about things he had always suspected were real, A school of magic. She told Jack exactly what to do, where to be, and when. and just in case, she enclosed all the instructions in a letter which was written in shining green ink.
It was risky, Jack wasn't used to new opportunity's in his seemingly boring, normal life, But he was willing to give it a shot, really, MAGIC, who would'nt?
