The Warning

I shot up to a sitting position in the bed, out of breath and with sweat making my hair stick to my face. I dried my brow with the back of my hand and dumped down on the bed again. My nightmares had been so real lately.

Deciding I would not get to sleep again, I threw the covers to the side and sat up again, letting my bare feet touch the cold wooden floor. I ran a hand through my cherry red locks and ruffled it a tiny bit, trying to calm down.

Half of the nightmares was about my parents. But something did not add up. My aunt always told me they were killed in an car accident, but my nightmares held pictures of downworlders and demons. My parents was fighting them, before they would be slayed or eaten. But what was the truth? Did I even know my parents?

"Oh come on, Elise, stop over thinking" I told myself sternly, rubbing my face with my hands. Why would they have been slayed by demons? Aunt never said anything about them being shadowhunter or demon slayers. Either way, aunt had always made them seem like regular humans. "Elise, stop it!" I spat at myself and rose up.

I grabbed a black t-shirt, a pair of black jeans and a leather jacket, before sliding them on.

I took a quick look over myself in the mirror as I tied my hair into a messy bun in my neck. Over the few months I had stayed at the institute had really worked out on my muscles. They seemed more defined.

Shaking my head at myself, I walked out of my room and sneaked my way through the corridors of the institute, making sure no one saw me. Every time someone approached, I would quickly press up against a wall behind a corner, a armor statue or what ever. Anything that could hide me.

I had plans. But I knew what the people would say. And by people, I mean Isabelle and co.

Safe outside in the streets, I lifted my hood and looked down, trying not to draw attention to myself in the pale, silver light of the moon.

My boots made dump sounds followed by a clirr for every stride I took with a small splash sound from the wet concrete on the sidewalk. But no other sound was heard, but distant roars of car engines and horns.

But where was I headed? The place where it all started. My aunt. She could tell me what I needed to know. I hoped at least she could.

As I walked consumed with my own thoughts and hopes, I did not hear what was approaching. Before I could react or see what it was, it slammed into me, knocking me over.

The air was pressed out of my lungs, and a throbbing headache was slowly setting in. My vision got slightly blurred from the tears, and I reached for my pocket. Nothing was there. No stele, no weapon, nothing. I was unarmed and defenseless.

I quickly curled into a ball, waiting for a blow to my head or something, but nothing came. Instead, noises of angry hisses and growls filled the air, before they turned into the sound of someone moving fast, fists hitting skin and bone and someone puncturing through skin. the sickening smell reached my nostrils, and for a moment I thought I was going to puke.

"Elise, can you sit up?" A masculine voice asked thick with worry.

Not able to shake my head or open my eyes, I felt my body fall into a bottomless pit of blackness, spinning me around a thousand times, before stopping.

In the darkness, a light point broke through, blinding my eyes. Instinctively I shielded my eyes with my hands, trying to let my eyes adjust to the brightness slowly. Honestly, it felt like my eyes was about to get fried, right out of my skull.

"Be warned!" A distant whisper carried through the air, into my ears. "The darkness will consume you, the light fade away and the sun will never be felt upon your skin ever more"  It continued, leaving a ghastly trail of goosebumps down my spine.

"Who are you?" I whispered, letting my hands fall down to my sides again.

"The warning you need to hear..." The ghost voice answered, holding a distant tone as the words was formed in the air around me. "... Do not trust anyone!"

"Who are you?!" I screamed, leaning towards the light with my upper body, trying to get a look to the center of the light ball in the distance. "What do you want from me?!"

"I am the warning, the heed that shall enlighten your knowledge" The sentence did not make sense to me. I spun around, trying to turn my back at the light. But where ever I turned, the light followed. No matter what I did to look away, it always followed my eyes. "Be warned, my child"

Collapsing on the ground, I embraced my head, screaming at the top of my lungs. trying to keep the distant voice away.

"Be warned, Elise!" It said before I was swallowed by the dark of the bottomless pit again. The pain shot up my body, making my limbs feel crushed, my muscles heavy and my joints stiff. I could not move.
