The Moonlight Catcher

Alone again tonight? This is good.

Yet, it isn’t entirely true is it?

Although no human walks this path beside me, I still have the strong, stone faced mountains to watch over me. The fast, ever changing river to nourish me. I have the bright and cheerful stars to guide me.

No. I am never truly alone. This is good too.

I gather my gourd and my courage and track the large white orb in the sky across this large grassy plain. In daylight the grass is yellow and merry. At night it grows dark and brushes past the skin of my arms only lightly. That’s okay. They are not ill. Only sleeping, like the sun.

I crouch and swiftly, yet silently, rush through the field. I do not want to wake them.

I arrive at the lake. My nightly journey is nearing it’s end.

There is a large, smooth rock, that climbs high and leans over the waters. I think it is as entranced by the moonlight’s reflection as I.

Standing over the edge of this rock, I pull my little gourd from around my waist and raise it above my head.

I must remember to bow.

I must remember to keep my head down.

It is just respectful.

It is just the done way.

I can feel the gourd grow heavy in my hands and I sigh in relief.

Yet again, the moon has been gracious to us. Yet again we may use it’s power. Smiling, I stare at the reflection on the lake’s dark face. The moving water will distort any picture that hits it’s surface, even mine. Maybe it hopes to remind us what we truly are, and where our place truly lies…

Maybe it hopes to prevent humans from growing vain.

Or maybe it hopes to show us we are all equal in the eyes of the Earth.

Rising to my feet, I effortlessly maintain my contentment. And before I head home I whisper, like I do every night, to the beings that help us.

I look out to the horizon proudly, and bow my head to those who are older and more insightful than I, and all of mankind.

"Thank you for your gifts. We will continue use them wisely."
