I felt trapped in my skin.My eyes wouldn't budge open and my head was spinning uncontrollably. It took everything in me to try to move the slightest, to try and see or feel what was happening. There was something wrong with my chest, my lungs felt as if they were shriveled raisins that just wouldn't let air in or out.
Then I heard mumbled voices slowly drift to meet my ears.
"Why isn't she awake yet?" Matt asked impatiently, his voice was low and stressed and seemed to be coming from my left. I tried to force my mouth to speak but I couldn't even get the words to slip. I wanted to tell him that I was awake, that I could hear everything he was saying but my words were trapped inside. "She needs time to heal, the impact of the fall was harsh on her body. Three of her ribs are broken, she's bruised from head to toe and you being impatient doesn't help." An unfamiliar female voice answered Matt, her voice held such certainty, she must've been the doctor.
I could hear Matt shuffle uncomfortably, probably embarrassed at the response that he received. Then I heard the door creak open and quick footsteps enter the room. "How is she?" The now new familiar voice asked, it was Thomas speaking. His energy filled the room and I felt oddly comforted with his presence. "She's still unconscious, there's no telling on how long she could be out. She needs time." The female voice answered, I could hear scribbling, maybe her notepad?
He sighed, his energy seemed tense. "Could I get a few moments with her... alone?" Thomas asked, his voice was calm and stable yet his energy seemed so anxious. I heard a scoff come from Matt, "What gives you the right to be in here alone with her, she doesn't even know you." Matt was mad, he needed to cool down before he gets too worked up.
"I technically saved her life, I think that gives me the right to be with her for a few minutes alone." He replied sharply.
"Yes, you can have a few minutes alone with her. Don't stress to wake her up, like I said, she needs time." The lady said giving him permission. I heard some shuffling and a few mumbled words from Matt then it was just us in the room.
I could hear his hesitant steps to the left side of the bed, coming close enough to rest his hand on the mattress. My heart picked up its pace, my breathing quickened making my chest ache even more than it did before. He was silent, all I could hear was the slow beeping of the monitor. Then his warm hand slipped into mine carefully. The same tingling feeling came again inching up my arm and throughout my whole body, it gave me just enough energy to close my hand around his. This was crazy, how could I feel so connected with someone I don't even know? It scared me just how invested I felt with him.
His other hand came up and traced my cheek leaving little charged needles across my skin. My eyes fluttered open to meet his stormy ones. My lips automatically arched up into a soft smile. It was like my heart felt safe and secure with him, but my head told me to worry, to step away and find out who this stranger is.
