(What I'm listening to: Cooler Than Me -- Mike Posner)

~ Mala

--------------------

Riley sighs and checks her watch again, her hope slowly fading. Charlie was supposed to meet her almost an hour ago, and still hasn't shown up.

Maybe he isn't coming, she thinks to herself as an old man gives her a pitying look. Maybe I was stupid to even think he'd want to go out with me.

Giving up, Riley begins to stand, not looking forward to the walk of shame she'll have to take to get out of the restaurant. But as she rises from her seat, a girl with an abundance of blonde hair quickly sits down in front of her.

"Oh my God, I'm so sorry I'm late!" The girl apologizes loudly, looking genuinely distressed. "Traffic is crazy out there!"

She leans forward a little, speaking in a quieter voice. "Hey, I'm Maya. Just go with it, alright? Whoever didn't show up is a total douche."

Riley smiles. And this time, when the waitress comes by, she doesn't ask for more time.

The idea of Charlie Gardner goes out the window as the evening plays out. Maya is way more open than Charlie could ever pretend to be, and makes Riley laugh with almost everything she says.

Eventually, they have to part ways, and Riley is afraid this is both the first and last time she'll ever see Maya Hart.

But it turns out the blue-eyed blonde was thinking the same thing. "So, umm... You wanna do this again sometime, maybe? We don't have to, I just had fun, and –"

Riley cuts her off with a laugh. "I had fun, too. Of course I want to do this again."

Maya lets out a small sigh of relief, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink. "Yeah, cool. Walk you home?"

Riley nods, and they start down the sidewalk side-by-side.

"For the record, Riley Matthews, you're very adorable."

Terrible, I know. *sigh*

I tried.
