Chapter 1: New Birth

Loki paced around his mate as his puppies entered their new lives. “Are they healthy?” The gruff man asked.

“I see money up ahead...and lots of it!” The another man laughed, plucking the three puppies, still more on the way, from the bed. Loki growled, and Caroline tried to, but didn’t have the strength.

“Shut up, dog,” The man with the puppies shot the pomeranians a look.

Another puppy entered the world, and the gruff man picked it up, and then the next.

“Is that all? Five puppies?” The gruff man snorted.

Loki snarled, hovering over his mate.

“Don’t worry, Loki, he doesn’t matter to us.” Caroline touched her muzzle to his blue merle fur.

“But what if someday he takes our puppies like our last litter? We can’t let them take this litter...we just can’t.” Loki fretted.

“You know if we stand up to these men, they might do something to our new puppies.” Caroline sighed, and laid her head to the newspaper she was given.

Their friend, who was also living in the room with them, woofed, “Don’t worry, guys, I’ve been here longer than you, and once your puppies are sold, you’ll forget the pain.”

“Princess...I know, but this litter...it’s different,”

Around the seven dogs was a small room, almost like a big bathroom, but with cement floor, dull, broken walls, an entry to a tiny 'play place' in the yard, surrounded by fence, with the grass too tall to play in, and inside was worse! No blankets or beds, just newspaper and cardboard boxes. The room was tight and enclosed, scary almost. Actually, it was scary. Because it had been three hours since Caroline’s puppies were born, and she hasn’t even met them yet. The bad men still had them.

“Oh, I hope they’re alright,” Loki sighed. “Did you see if any were merle, or were they all wolf sable, like you?”

“There was two wolf sables, and two blue merles, but one of them...their body was blue merle, and head was wolf sable. SO adorable. I think it was a female, but I only saw her in a glimpse, then she was in the men’s arms. If they’re not back to me soon, they’ll surely die of hunger!” Caroline wailed.

“Shhh...Caroline, it’s okay. They’ll be fine,” Loki licked her fluffy fur, smoothing it down. But inside, he wasn't really sure.

“Don’t worry, Caroline, you’ll be fine, and your puppies will too,” Princess comforted.

Suddenly the men unlocked the door to the room and placed the puppies next to Caroline, when they started suckling in a blink. Caroline barked happily, lying down. “Now, you mutts, listen to me carefully,” The gruff men paced back and forth in front of the dogs. “I want your puppies to be rich! I want them to sell for 1,000$ each. Make sure of that, alright? Or else I’ll take your puppies away, and never give them back! You’ll scent them in this house...but you’ll never find them...” The man laughed, but Caroline growled, joining the chourus of Loki and Princess.

As the puppies grew up, the wolf sable and blue merle female became even more beautiful every minute. Loki had chose her name: Diamond. As for Caroline chose the two wolf sables: Blossom for a female, and Frisbee for the male, and Loki chose the male merle’s name, which is now Ash, and the female blue merle that Caroline chose a name for is Rain.

“Mom? Why is this place so boring, and outside so boring, too? All it is is brown and gray everywhere, but when I look up, it’s all sorts of colors? How come?” Blossom asked.

“Well, I’ve heard it’s called a fence. It keeps us in, so we don’t get in danger,” Caroline ruffed carefully.

“You and dad seem to hate these men. But I don’t think it’s a bad life. Do you, Rain? Ash, Diamond? Frisbee?” Blossom looked at her siblings, tilting her head.

“Yeah, me neither.” Rain agreed.

Caroline and Loki shared a glance. “Well, honey, that’s because you haven’t seen what’s outside these walls. There’s so many beautiful colors and things, but these men keep us trapped in this horrible place,” She shook her head. “We were with wonderful people, me and your father, until they left one night to go out for dinner, and these men snuck in! And can you guess what they did? They took us to the place against our will. We were snapping and barking, growling and biting, but nothing worked,"

“But I thought the men were nice?” Diamond asked.

“No, they’re not.” Loki growled. “Now, why don’t you five rest. Dinner time will be soon,”

The five little bundles curled up around Caroline and closed their eyes.

“Caroline? I’m going to go outside in the fence, alright? I just need...fresh air,”

“Alright, Loki,” Caroline agreed.

“I’ll go with him,” Princess suggested, trotting out next to her friend.
