Keyanna POV
"Ya Ya," I heard my 4 year old sister, Kimberly, yell from the living room of our small 2 bedroom apartment.
"What," I called back as I sat up in my bed. I looked over to the clock and saw that it was only 8:32.
"Somebody wants you," she yelled back.
I was about to get on Kimberly for opening the door without me there. In our neighborhood it was not safe to open the door without knowing who it was first. I couldn't even think of anyone who would be up this early on a Saturday morning other than our neighbor Mrs. Roberts. She would check on us often because she knew about our situation. She did all she could to help us, and I was very grateful for her. I quickly got out of bed and made my way to the living room.
"Kim what did I tell you," I stopped mid sentence when I saw that it was not Mrs. Roberts sitting in our living room. It was a man who appeared to be in his early 20s. I had seen him around the hood a few times but I knew nothing about him other than to stay away from him. He was a notorious drug dealer known as King. I stood there frozen in shock and fear while thinking of a way to get my sister away from him without sounding rude. I didnt know what was going through his head or how crazy he was. Down here people shoot first and ask questions later.
While I was running through possible scenarios in my head, I noticed King stand and pick Kimberly up. At this point I really began to panic. I figured he was going to kill me and kidnap my sister. Then I started to wonder how Kimberly was so calm being in the arms of a stranger. Half the time she wouldn't even let our mom pick her up. King slowly walked over to me and I knew this was the end. To my surprise, he handed Kimberly over to me. I gladly took her into my arms and kissed her forehead.
"Im not here to hurt you," King said as he took a step back. "Are you Keyanna?" he asked looking down at me.
"Yes," was all I could manage to say. Anyone else would have got some smart remark, but not King.
"Kenya owes me some money and she told me to come here and get it from you," King said.
My blood instantly began to boil at the mention of my mothers name. She was always messing things up then expecting me to fix it. This was the 2nd time this month somebody came looking for money. The first time I was not as scared because she was here with us. She ended up borrowing the little money I had saved for food to pay him back. After that she promised to stop, but now we are right back in the same position. "How much does she owe you," I asked, knowing that if it was more than the $35 I had managed to hide, we were in trouble.
"$125," he responded.
I could have fainted when I heard that number. I had nowhere near that amount of money. Now it was really over. I didnt know what we were going to do. I cant believe she would do something like this. No, actually I can. All my mom cared about was herself and where she was going to get her next fix. I slowly looked up at King and said, "I dont have that kind of money now".
King was about to speak but was interrupted by a phone call. "Talk to me," he spoke into the phone. Whatever the person on the phone said must have been bad because King's face filled with anger. "How could you let this happen?" he yelled. A few seconds later he said, "I'm on my way," and hung up the phone. He turned to me and said, "You got lucky, Im coming back around 7:30 and I need my money, that's one thing I don't play about". Without another word he left the apartment.
"Kim I thought I told you not to open the door if Im not with you. We could have been hurt," I tell my sister as I walked over to sit her on the couch.
"I sorry Ya Ya. I thought it was Mommy," she said looking up at me.
"Its okay, just dont do it again. Did you see mommy this morning?" I asked her.
