Supers and Sidekicks

*First things first. I went back and changed Ryuu to Will because I felt like he needed a new name. I think I changed some other stuff too. Picture of Aden (Ryan Ross) above. Anyway, this one is a bit shorter, sorry.*

Moonlight shone through the window above my bed, reflecting off of my laptop screen. It was either really late at night or really early in the morning, and I was browsing the internet. I had fallen asleep for about an hour, but apparently that hour was all my body needed to be awake and restless for the rest of the night. The most interesting thing I'd found was a video of Violet, a new up-and-coming superhero, the fifth to come out in public in the US. She controlled electricity and made it purple. (Hence the name.) Her sidekick's name was Blue, keeping with the color theme. All five heroes that have made their powers public in the last 5 years have sidekicks, none of whom have powers.

I think the whole trend was started by Leo, the first superhero, and his sidekick Catus, latin for lion and tiger. Leo had super strength and could jump really high, so he could basically fly. Leo hadn't really tried to go public, he had just saved someone from getting hit by a car. Lucky for him, he did it so fast that no one could get a picture. He got a suit from somewhere, and started saving more people. He is known worldwide as the first superhero, and the press gave him his name, and Catus'. After a few months, he set up a non-profit for other supers to get suits and other stuff after he found out about one. Catus handled the press and got him out of any situation he couldn't handle by using some form of martial arts.

I looked at my alarm clock. 3:07. I was so going to regret this in the morning. I shut the laptop, placing it safely on my black nightstand. Black was the main theme of my room. I was surrounded by black walls, black furniture, and a black (and gray) comforter. Yawning, I stretched out an arm to turn my alarm on, then rolled over so I was completely covered by the blanket, blinding me and making me even more tired.

I heard a beep. Then another one. And another one. Well, I was right about one thing; I totally regretted staying up late. My eyes squinted against the morning sunlight, which bathed my bedroom in a warm light, which was nice, yet extremely aggravating at this time of day. I yawned and stretched my tired body, rolling out of bed- somehow actually landing on my feet and not my face. At least I had two classes that I was looking forward to...sort of. English was fun because I loved writing, and orchestra was fun because I loved cello, but English was not fun because I disliked projects where you need a partner. I'll get over it.

I got ready for school, running a hand through my dark brown hair, giving up when it didn't cooperate and just grabbing a hat.

I had a throbbing headache, and it was not, unfortunately, cured by my fellow high schoolers on the bus, whose annoying cries echoed inside my head. I plugged by earbuds into my phone and put my music on shuffle, drowning out the sounds around me. I was about to fall asleep, when the bus jerked to a halt in front of the one building I really didn't want to see. School.

During English, all we did was work on the projects, and at the start of class, Will and I exchanged numbers so we could work on it from home if that was needed. "So, day two begins. What do you want to be when you grow up?" Will asked.

"Probably a musician, but I'm not in a band, and I can't sing. If that doesn't work out, I guess I'll probably be a journalist, or a writer, or something. What about you?"

"I'm going to be a superhero." He said it so seriously that I just couldn't help but laugh.

"Sorry, I shouldn't have laughed," I said, "But if that doesn't work out, what will you do then? And anyway, what 'superpower' do you have?"

"You don't need powers to be a superhero. Take Batman for example," He countered, "His only superpower is being rich. And if I did have powers, why would I tell you?"

"Good point...but you never know, I could have superpowers, then maybe we could be a team. I wouldn't want to team up with someone who doesn't even trust me enough to tell me his powers." I smiled, and he laughed. Supers would sometimes team up for periods of time, but usually not for more than a few months.

"I don't think we would be a team anyway. I would be the hero, and you would be my sidekick, since I'm taller than you and I bet you don't have superpowers." I tried to think of a sidekick who was taller than their counterpart, but my mind was blank.

"We all know that the heroes wouldn't be alive if it weren't for sidekicks though. I actually wouldn't mind being the background character either." I thought back to when Thomas was still here. I was basically just a sidekick then, Thomas just didn't have superpowers and didn't fight crime...okay it was very different. But the point is, I'm used to bring a background character. With that, we decided to get back on topic, as we had derailed a bit and really needed to finish our projects.

"So, for real, what do you want to be when you grow up besides a superhero?"

"Hmm... Probably a lawyer or something boring like that. Where do you want to live?"

"Seattle, preferably. Or maybe San Francisco or LA, because that's where all the artists and musicians go. And I like rain, which is the real reason for Seattle." I responded, taking note of his job ideas, and doodling a superhero in the corner of the paper.

"San Francisco is my first choice. Other than that, just about anywhere out west, where it's warm. Do you have any pets, or a favorite animal?"

"I don't have any pets, but I like animals, and my favorite would have to be wolves." After that, we started writing.

In all of my other classes, we started reading the textbooks and doing stereotypical school stuff, so I was bored. It wasn't that I disliked school, only that it was all so pointless. The only exciting thing that happened was during lunch when some kid tripped and spilled his food. I felt kind of bad for laughing, but the kid was a jerk, so he deserved it.

"My life is so boring." I mumbled to myself, glaring stubbornly at my notes on Will and an empty sheet of lined paper. It was already 5 o'clock, and I had been trying to start the essay for almost an hour. My thoughts drifted back to my conversation from earlier that day. What if everyone has superpowers and we just don't know because we never try to use them? My gaze locked on the mechanical pencil, lying abandoned on the floor after I chucked it at the wall in frustration. I stared at it for a minute, trying to make it do something. I must be really tired if I'm actually trying to prove to myself that I have superpowers.

**I promise it will get more exciting. Also, if there are any typos, or if anything is confusing or could be written better, please tell me. I already know that it's not that good, and I need to work on showing not telling, but the longest I've ever kept with a story is about a month and a half, and I really want to finish this one. There is also no update schedule, I just update when I finish a chapter (which will be more often because now it's Summer and I'm past my writers block for this story). Thanks for reading!**
