_______________

The killer nervously scrunches down in the small dark enclosure; voices are talking overhead. She strains to hear what they're saying but can't make out a sound. I hope he doesn't rat me out. She remembers the fear in his eyes when she pulled out her knife. He's too scared to do something stupid. Yeah, but a good cop knows how to make him talk. She glances towards the tin. I should've brought him with me. It's too late to change things now. She wipes sweat from her brow.

"They're gone," the man yells, as he kicks the tin.

The killer jumps at the sudden noise. This isn't a setup, is it? No, I heard them run off. What if they're only pretending to run off so I'll come out. She looks towards the cover again. Most cops would've had it off by now. The killer cautiously slides the thin metal aside. The hot afternoon sun blinds her as she climbs the rickety stairs.

"I don't know what you did, lady, but I overheard the dispatcher say canines are on their way."

"They're sending the dogs?" She anxiously glances around.

"That's what I heard."

She turns to her right and then her left. They'll catch me no matter which way I go unless I throw them off, but how? She thinks back to her academy days. I can buy some time if I run side to side or walk through a crowd, but that'll only delay the inevitable. What if we swap clothes and then head off in different directions? The dogs will be so confused they won't know which way to go. She turns towards the man beside her. "Strip."

"What?"

"Take off your damn clothes and do it fast." She nervously looks down the alley.

"This is no time for sex, lady." I wish it were, he thinks eyeing the lady in front of him.

"Is that all you think about?" He smiles. "If we switch clothes the mutts won't know which path to follow."

"I ...I'm not sure I want to get involved in this, whatever it is."
