"Why are you still here?" I ask Duncan who hasn't left even though he already put the boxes in my locker.
"Why not?" he answers, waggling his eyebrows. Ugh. I wish he'd just leave me alone! You know you don't actually wish that... says a voice in my head. Great. Now I know I'm going crazy. I'm over Duncan! And anyways I have to grab my stuff for first period! I have to go to the far end of the school for Honors English.
"Because I have places to be!" I huff.
"So do I, Princess, but I'd rather be here," he says. Don't fall for his tactics again, Courtney. You're better than that. I tell myself.
"Oh yeah? Where exactly do you have to be?" I retort.
"Honors English," he answers quietly, almost in an aggravated tone.
"What?! You got into Honors English?!" I exclaim. How in the world did Duncan of all people get into Honors English?!?
"Don't remind me. I'm smarter than you think, Princess." Duncan looks down at his feet. He's acting as if he's ashamed.
"I know you're smart..." I say under my breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing!" I quickly add. Oh god I think I'm blushing!
"Ok, well where do you have to be that's so important?" he asks stepping closer. I look at his hands and see that he already has his books and supplies. Hmm. Is it possible that Duncan is being responsible?
"Honors. English." I say coarsely. I grab what I need out of my locker and shut it.
"Well we can walk together than... Shall we?" He offers an arm. As if! Is it bad that I really want to take it? Nope! Not today!
"Fine, but don't get any ideas," I answer sternly. I start the long way to the other end of the school and Duncan follows. I hope someone else I know is in my homeroom and first period instead of just Duncan!
We walk into Miss Lance's room and I see some people I know, but not any of my close friends. Great. Just great. I head to the back of the room and take a seat. Unfortunately, Duncan sits down beside me.
"Can't you sit somewhere else?" I ask.
"Do you see any other seats? And it's a free country ya know," he says. I roll my eyes and he just smiles. You know, it's really hard trying to hate him.
"Fine. Whatever. Just don't bother me or get me in trouble," I reply. Maybe Miss Lance will assign us seats...
"No promises," Duncan says, winking at me. Ugh! I don't understand it. I don't understand it at all.
"Welcome back to school, class!" exclaims Miss Lance. She's really pretty. You can tell she's young. I bet Miss Lance just graduated. This'll be interesting. "I'm Miss Lance, your homeroom and Honors English teacher! As long as it's not a problem...I will allow you all to sit wherever you want. I believe that you are all responsible and mature young adults. First things first, attendance!" Miss Lance then proceeds to look at a list and call out names. When she calls Duncan's name, every single person in the room is shocked. When all the jaws drop and the chorus of "What?!" dies down, Duncan pretends to look all offended and Miss Lance gives out a lecture. I'm trying so hard to stifle my laughter. Duncan keeps looking at me and either smiling or winking. Don't tell anyone, but I kind of like it. Maybe this class won't be as bad as I thought it would be...
