Chapter 2: I Guess This is Goodbye

The doors opened and Mother walked in. "You have three minutes." Said a Peacekeeper. I pulled mother into a tight hug, never wanting to let go. But I must. No, not now. Not here. "I'm going to miss you." I whispered. "Im going to miss you too." She said. The hug ended, and we both started crying. "Mom, you must get food. Don't just lay in bed missing me. Get food." I say. She hangs onto my every last word, and I know that she will never forget them. "I love you." I managed to choke out through all the memories and emotions. She starts crying softly to herself. A Peacekeeper comes in and takes her away. "I love you too!" She yells before the door closed. I heard struggling and she pried open the door.

"I love you so much!" She yells, trying to pry the door open again. I don't have time to reply before the doors and slammed and I hear a scream of utter terror. My eyes widen, as I hear nothing, not even her breath, from the other side of the door. I tried opening the door, but it's jammed. "No!" I screamed. I kicked open the door and saw Mother laying on the floor, one leg bent one leg straight, covered in blood. The Peacekeepers had killed my mother.

"What the hell did you do to her?" I demanded, sobs trapped in my throat. But the Peacekeepers did nothing, let alone talk. I burst into tears.

They killed my mother for this? For wanting to get one last glimpse of her daughters face before its covered in blood on national television?

I stomped down the hall, out of the justice building, and onto the stage. People were walking back home with little to no effect on them, since I don't have any friends. A couple people noticed me standing there, and it soon turned into everyone noticing. All their eyes were on me. I felt I might cry, since I will never see these people again. I started breathing heavily, and turned and ran into the Justice Building. Peacekeepers were on their way out to carry me back inside. They stopped me before I could take another breath. They dragged me off the stage and into a carriage. Valentina sits in the carriage while Cato is on her left. He looks up at me with wide, blue eyes. He stares a bit, but then I sit down. The carriage ride is silent, except for Valentina is talking about the Capitol. After a brief ride, we arrive at the train station. Valentine guided Cato and I into the train's dining car. I sat down in front of a mahogany table. "I'll find your mentors." She said and with that, she left Cato and I in a weird silence. I heard him breathing, like a vicious killing machine with buttery blond hair and icy blue eyes. He looked at me.

"I'm so glad you're here." He said. I crinkled my eyebrows. Glad I'm here? Why?

"Why?" I asked. He looked at the ground shyly. "Because I like you," he said. My eyes widened.

He likes me? I never expected it to come so easily from him. Then again, he probably thinks I like him too because that's just how arrogant he is. But maybe he just likes me as an ally.

As if reading my mind, Cato said, "Like more than a friend like."

My lips parted. Like more than a friend?

This isn't easy, since I don't feel the same way. He likes me, and I think he is just another arrogant Career.

I will be a Career, but only since I throw knives so great that people turn heads. Even Peacekeepers.

Valentina came back with a man and a woman: Enobaria and Brutus.

Brutus was clearly wasted, but Cato didn't notice. "Hello, I'm Cato." He said to Brutus. Brutus laughed.

He hunched over, and vomited on the floor. Valentina's face turned to pure terror. "Somebody get an Avox!" She screeched.

A few seconds after she said that, a red headed Avox came in and cleaned up Brutus's mess.
