Jay
I hear the faint click of footsteps across the floor of the building my sister and I basically live in. I know without a doubt that Bird is the one the sound is coming from, who else would it be?
The sight of Bird's face confirmed the thought at hand. I felt a sad pang inside me because not to long ago it wouldn't have been Bird coming down from the third floor. It would have been River.
River was my one and only, she was the girl I loved. I know most people would think its not real love because we were only fifteen, but I know that all of those people are wrong. I did love her I truly did even all of her bad habits I loved everything she did, said, was. Her hair was a dark and deep red and her eyes were the brightest blue like the sky on a cloudless day.
Now don't get me wrong she had her quirks too. She would get angry over stupid things like if my hair fell in my eyes. She had this chip missing from one of her front teeth because I pushed her in the water and she fell on a rock. Her name was so ironic because no matter what I did or said she was afraid of water. There's more to her than that, but that's what I try to remember.
River is gone. Forever. All because of stupid things I did trying to be funny. We used to take a three day hike out to the edge of The Society and sit and watch the sunrise on a ledge over a mile out from there and it was amazing. Last time we strayed a little to close and she got captured.
*Flashback*
"Oh Jay it's so wonderful." She said as we watched the sun rise.
"I know, and that's why we come out here to see it."I pushed her hair out of her eyes and she smiled.
"Um Jay?" Her blue eyes locked with my hazel ones and I smiled back at her.
"Yeah?"
"This one looks so much more pretty than last time." For a second I have no clue what she is talking about. Then it hits me she was talking about the sunrise.
"Yeah it does." Streaks of red, pink, yellow, and orange blaze across the horizon. It is almost unreal in all my fifteen years of life I had never seen the sun come up like this. The shining light was amplified by the reflection off of the glass and metal of buildings.
The whole sight was so surreal and it felt like for just a minute time stopped. For that minute the illusion that everything was perfect seemed stronger. I felt a slight nudge from River. Looking over at her I see that she is standing, and pointing at something glimmering the distance.
"What is that?" She asked me.
"I don't know."
"I'm going to check it out." She said as she started to make her way down the steep hill. I realized she wasn't kidding and ran after her.
When I got to the bottom of the hill I saw River holding up a small object. It was a little silver heart with a blue gem in the center it was hanging on a little silver chain. She inspected the object she had the heart in her palm and the chain blowing in the wind.
Then I heard a light humming noise but I had no clue where it was coming from. Then like a quick like a bolt of hot lightning River collapsed into a heap on the ground. I ran over to her a sense of urgency pored over me. What I saw astonished me.
Protruding from the skin above her heart was a small silvery object. I pulled it out realizing that it must have caused serious damage. The object was as long as the distance from my wrist to the tip of my longest finger.
Then I felt it. A hard heavy strike right above my temple just enough to stun me not enough to kill. I was sent tumbling backwards into a tree stump. I looked up at my assailant, connecting my eyes with his. I heard a woman's voice giving the orders.
"Damian drag the boy over there. Jason take the girl over to the horses and give her the treatment." This woman was fairly tall her hair was almost golden with piercing almost unnatural green eyes. She got right up in my face and glared but I didn't back down or look away.
"Look here boy my name is Allison I run this whole operation. I am head of The Society and you would be?"
"Jay"
"Well Jay" the way she said my me was full of scorn and hate "I just want you to know that I think you could be very handy to me. I need someone fearless to lead my army would you be willing." I shook my head. "Fine I guess you can have it your way and never see your little friend ever again."
"Wait what no you can't do that." I yelled at the woman.
"I can and I did."
"Wait what are you going to do with her."
"Well it just depends on how well the anti venom takes effect. The odds don't look good for her though that needle pierced her pretty good. The poison though not lethal had its desired effect."
"And the desired effect would be?"
"Classified only high standing members of The Society can know that."
"Whatever." I mumbled hoping that she didn't hear me.
"Boy I should kill you right here right now just for that but I won't because its more fun to watch you struggle. Just remember if you tell that sister of yours anything I swear I will kill her and your precious little friend." I did a complete double take how did she know that Bird exists. "And just remember this will not be the last time you and I meet. I hope when I see you again that you will make the smarter choice then I'll reconsider letting you see your friend again."
End of Flashback*
Bird sat next to me. The fire burned ferociously in front of us. She got comfortable and then started to speak.
"Jay its pointless to keep thinking about River you know that she's dead." Yes I told her River was dead its was safer if she didn't know the whole truth. "Why don't you stop wishing for her to come back. You know that it won't happen it didn't when Mom and Dad died."
"Bird I just don't think you get it."
"Get what Jay? The fact that you can't move on I mean I know you've known her forever but that doesn't mean you just give up now that she is gone."
"I'm going out Bird just let the fire die out." Then I just walked out the door past the building made of super strong chemically enhanced steel. I walked out to the edge and started heading into the forest bordering our city on one side. Thinking if only Bird knew the whole truth.

A/N I know this took forever and I'm not going to make excuses why it did. Honestly I don't think this was even worth the wait. Its more of just an explanation for Jay and why he is the way he is. I'm just going to say that I will try to do better. This was my terribly bad attempt at writing romance ,and why Yes I know I really do suck really bad at writing romance so I just wanted to let all of you who care know that thankfully this story won't have to much of it. Thanks to all of you who have stuck out the wait and are reading this now.
