we all have that one thing in life that drives us crazy from the day we start to think about it. for kids, it might be halloween, or summer break. but for me? cutting. surgery, i mean. that feeling you get cutting open into a abdomen or something else extreme. i can't describe the feeling, but how would i know that feeling. why, im just an intern. an intern who hasn't even step foot into an OR before. briton hayes is my name, im 26, and im on my way to seatle grace hospital for my first day as an intern. i've already been assigned my attending, along with four other interns.
i pull into the parking lot, park my car and sit there. 'you can do this, briton. you got this.' i encourage myself. i grab my schedule from my bag and look at it. Meredith Grey- General Surgery. i place the paper back in my bag and walk for the locker room.
When I walk in, i see light blue scrubs surrounding me. I find my locker number and place my things in it. I get undressed and put my scrubs on. The paper says to meet in the ER to begin rounds. Once i get there, she is standing in front. The legend. The amazingly, amazed, unstoppable, meredith grey. i stand up, straight and tall. "briton hayes?" she calls out. "yes mam. here!" she raises a brow. "on call rooms. sleep when you can, where you can. you know, but not with anybody. not attendings, especially not attendings. sleeping with attendings, not a good idea. where was i?" she states abruptly. she goes to finish her statement but is interrupted by arrogant attending with an aroma of scotch coming from him. "the first shift starts now and lasts 36 hours. you're grunts, nobodies, the bottom of the surgical food chain. you run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop. and you don't complain." dr. grey looks back at us. "what he said." we stand there as she hands us our charts. "logan, check on my pre-ops, samantha, to the pit, jason, you do my post-ops." she pauses. "what are you all still doing here? go!" she motions for us to leave. "excuse me, dr. grey?" i ask politely. "what?" she turns my way. "i don't mean to bother you, but you didn't call my name for your charts." she smiles. "well, then that means you get to follow me around and maybe scrub in on a gallbladder removal. but that just depends on how well you can talk to patients, fetch my lab results, oh and my coffee."
i can't wait to brag to my friends about gallbladder surgery. i've never even step foot into an OR. this is amazing. i have been here approximately two hours and i'm going to scrub in on my first ever surgery. this is going to be the best job ever. wow. 'who's the hot attending with ships on his scrub cap?'
he walks in the on call room with a girl. mereidth grey. she broke her own rule.
i love this job so much.
