Chapter 23:
The only thought I can form as Terry's lips move against mine is that this feels so wrong. His lips don't mould to mine; they are far too wet and he tastes of the large amount of alcohol he has consumed. After a few moments of being a stunned statue, I push him away and try to wipe my mouth inconspicuously. I look up at him and start working out what I am supposed to do next. Terry can barely stand and his eyes are half closed, half watching me.
"Terry." I say quietly, "You need to get home."
"No, I need you. I really feel like there is a connection between us and…" he trails off looking helpless which of course evokes pity from my side.
"I really understand," I say, placing a hand on his arm lightly, "But you're currently intoxicated and probably have no idea what you're saying. If, by chance, you are being serious… I am sorry, I just can't."
Somehow Terry mistakes that sentence for 'I really want to be with you' and then mushes his lips against mine- more forcefully this time. Not again, I think, becoming annoyed with the fact that my words are not getting through to him. So I slap him. Hard.
The noise reiterates throughout the room and for one long moment the previously wild room goes silent. I shut my eyes and breathe in slowly through my nose. I hate being the centre of attention, I hate that my life has become so complicated, I hate that two problematic boys have decided to 'like' me at the same time especially when I was perfectly fine- and single- before. Exhaling, I reopen my eyes to face a very hurt looking Terry cupping his red tinted cheek and a very angry looking Sky.
"She just told you she doesn't want to be with you so why the hell did you kiss her?" Sky yells and grabs Terry by the collar.
"I appreciate your concern Skylar but I have this under control." I tell him and he considers what I have said, still looking pretty furious.
"If you touch her again, I will personally make it my mission to kill you." Sky threatens Terry. After throwing him one last murderous glance, Sky stalks off leaving Emma behind alone. Luckily everyone has decided that our little scene has gotten a bit too boring and have returned to whatever they were doing before.
"Now who was supposed to drive you home?" I ask Terry again, slowly. He pauses and then points to a guy with spiked up hair who is chatting up some girls. I poke the guy on the arm and he turns to look at me. At first he seems annoyed that I interrupted him but then quickly forgets the girls when he takes in my appearance.
"Hey I'm Zack, what can I do for you?" he introduces himself and then lets his eyes wander over my body. This guy seriously disgusts me.
"Could you please drive Terry home now?" I ask, getting straight to the point. Zack looks taken aback by my motives for talking to him. "Afterwards you can come back of course." I add, although I would prefer for him not to.
"Would I get anything in return?" He asks suggestively, obviously over my bluntness, and purses his lips together in a manner he believes to be sexy. Hell no.
"We'll see." I reply, smiling and he drags Terry away immediately. I then scowl in his direction.
"I can't believe you used him like that him like that." A voice murmurs. I look up at Sky and can't help noticing that the look accompanying that sentence is one of approval.
"Well you pretty much used poor Emma." I retort.
"Emma? You mean tall, blonde and hot?" he asks and I frown, knowing fully well how jealous I seem.
"Well she is tall and blonde, yes." I reply.
"Not hot?" Sky teases.
I shoot him a look, "I'm not gay. Besides, I have seen hotter people than her."
"Yeah?"
"Like…" I trail off, scanning the mass of people, "Him."
Sure enough Sky glances over towards the cute guy I have pointed out and know its his turn to be jealous, "I am way better looking than that guy."
"Sure." I say, laughing and then notice something. A certain familiar looking girl with red curls is dancing with a sporty jock called Kyle. I really didn't expect that of Sarah- especially since she is even more awkward with guys than me and seems to prefer Science textbooks over people. Kyle, on the other hand, is very comfortable with the ladies (although his reputation is better than most of the guys) and he probably couldn't distinguish an electron from an enzyme. Maybe that old saying 'Opposites attract' is true, I think to myself and then glance at Sky, sometimes.
"What?" Sky asks, raising an eyebrow.
"I was just thinking," I start and then notice the party around us, "That this party has gotten a little too wild?"
"Maybe a little." he replies, shrugging, and I look at the people around me a little more closely.
"I don't think I know even half of these people… And this party is for me." I tell him and he finally glances around.
"I think you may be right." Sky says finally. As we squeeze through the crowd, we brush hands a few times, giving me tingles. At last we find Jamie and I pull her away from whoever she is with.
"Jamie! Who are all these people? Do you know all of them?" I ask accusingly. She looks around, seemingly noticing everyone for the first time. When her eyes land back on me, it is obvious that she has had a few drinks.
"I think I may know the answer to your question," Sky says and hands me his phone. It then becomes clear to me that Jamie didn't exactly keep this party as a private event on Facebook.
"Sorry?" she offers, giving me a sheepish look.
"Jamie!" I exclaim. "We need to clear this party out right now! We have no idea what kind of people are here."
Just as the words leave my lips, sirens explode into the night.
