Chapter Sixteen
His mother either doesn't hear him or chooses to ignore him, "Michie, this is Paige. Honey, say hi to Michelle."
Paige eyes me wearily and then whispers, "Hello."
"Hi," I reply and smile.
"And this," Jenny announces, motioning to her left, "is Jamie."
I peer closely at Jenny and notice a little boy watching me timidly. Jamie? I have to tell my best friend about this. …How could Sky have sex with a girl with the same name as his brother? I know I should get over it but the idea of them still makes me cringe. Jenny good naturedly pushes Jamie in my direction.
He looks up shyly and it's all I can do to not 'awh' out loud. Jamie's resemblance to Sky is so striking that for a moment I just stare at him. He has the same mouth, the same face shape, the same everything. Well almost. His hair is a different shade of brown, almost honey coloured. And his eyes, although very similar in every other way, are green like his mother's.
"Hi," I finally say and kneel down to his height. He doesn't reply but I can tell he is interested in what I'm saying. "Your name is the same as my best friend's, except she's a girl."
I don't think he is overly pleased to hear that, especially when his older siblings snigger. I shoot Sky a Look and then continue by remarking, "I always told her it was a boy's name."
Jamie grins triumphantly at Sky and Paige. He then shoots me a shy smile, and I almost die of adorable-ness. Jenny looks at me approvingly and then tells them that they can play with me until dinner. Then she leaves to cook it.
Before standing again, when Sky is out of earshot, I whisper to Jamie, "And by the way Skylar is really a girl's name." I know it is unisex and pretty sexy as a guy's name but I can have my fun, right?
"Is not!" Sky retorts and Jamie giggles. Oh well, I thought he was out of earshot. I laugh along with him. I follow them back into the rec-room place where Sky and I were playing our little truth game.
Sky sits on the couch, draping his arm lazily over the back of it. He looks pretty annoyed that he has to hang with his brother and sister. Paige sits daintily on the ground, her legs crossed and her younger brother crawls next to her. I feel awkward on the couch so I slide onto the ground. Both the kids watch me curiously and I try, but I can't help blushing. She smiles at my reaction and, I find out, she has a very sweet smile with dimples. Damn them for being so good looking. I return the smile and self-consciously tuck a strand of my straight hair behind my ear.
"...So," I say. "How old are you guys?"
Paige answers first, "Twelve."
Jamie holds up four fingers.
"Really?" I ask, "You're already 4? Soon you'll be bigger than all of us." He smiles at the thought before Sky laughs at him. I scowl at Sky after Jamie's lower lip trembles.
