For the first time ever, I followed Gina to her home that she currently shared with her sister's family. She was very quiet through out the ride to the house and since I didn't know the best thing to say, I kept mute. She gave directions and I silently followed until we got to a house with black steel gates. "Thank you, I'd see you later" ,she said and practically flew out of my rental car.
I watched her run to the gate, open it and run inside the house. I was worried about her but also very curious ,but then, there was little I could do about my curiousity at that moment so I started the rental car and headed home.
I was two houses from my apartment when my phone begun to ring. It was Gina. "Hey",
"Rob, please come back. I don't wanna be alone right now", she sobbed into the phone and that took me aback ,
" Are you alright?" , I asked, pulling the car to a stop,
"Just come back", she said, sobbing some more.
"Alright, I'm on my way", I said and made a u turn back to her place.
On getting there, I knocked and then tried the door to see if it was open, it was.
"Gina, what is the matter?" I asked when I saw her right there, sitting on the floor with the lights off.
"I just don't want to be alone right now."
I said nothing and just helped her up and led her to the nearest sofa to sit. We both sat down and she adjusted herself so that she rested her head on my chest just beneath my chin.
We stayed that way for quite a while till her body stopped shaking and her breath was more even.
"Thelma was an old lady I met when I was really young . I lost my parents, both of them, when I was 15. It was first my Dad to diabetes and then my mom in an accident. It was hard to survive after the rent ran out. My sister was in boarding school then and she had no choice but to stay there for the whole session, while I just slept in the kitchen of the restaurant where my family used to eat at every Friday evening. Over the years I had made a few friends there, so the cook was kind and let me sleep in the kitchen."
I couldn't believe that she went through something similar to what Robin and I went through, no family to care for her, no place to sleep and worse, nobody to protect her."I was fine with sleeping in the kitchen and the left over food Chef Salvador sent my way. I always helped with the dishes and the cleaning of the kitchen in general just for shelter and food. I was alright with the arrangement until a new waiter was hired." She sighed as if she was reliving the memory of that time.
"Ian was straight out of high school and was interested in improving his human relation skills before proceeding to college. He had curly black hair, the bluest eyes and his chin was dimpled. He was about eighteen years old then and I was almost sixteen. He was very polite an he didn't treat me like the girl living in the kitchen and eating leftovers. At my age, that was enough to have me dreaming about him and smiling sheepishly at him. We used to talk late into the night after the restaurant had closed. He would keep my company until I was yawning before he went to his house to sleep." She was smiling at her hands and I could feel the love she had for this Ian guy.
" So, it wasn't long before I gave myself to him, he was my first and I have never regretted that decision. Not even for a second. He was sweet and tender and made me very happy. It was that night he told me he loved me and I was so happy. A few days after, my sister called that she had found our mother's step mother and that the woman wants to take us in. I was very happy that I'd have a proper bed at least but I also worried that I would be separated from Ian. I told him my fears and he assured me that we won't be far apart. And as luck would have it, our step grandmother lived only a few streets away from Ian's home, so we continued our relationship without problems. I got a job as a bookshop attendant and was earning enough money to keep body and soul together, my sister had graduated from high school by this time but she couldn't chase her dream of going to college to study fashion designing. There was no money for that. Our step grandmother didn't have much either, just enough to pay bills and feed three of us. Jane started looking for a job too and she got one, as an intern at a furniture making company." , She paused to cough and I was just listening to this side of her I didn't know existed." Meanwhile, Ian and I continued to meet up and have constant unprotected sex. We were happy and he was my break from reality. We stayed happy until I got pregnant". I was shocked but I had promised myself not to ask any questions at all so I just stayed quiet and let her continue.
"I was worried about having a baby at my age, so I told Ian I wasn't going to keep the child. He encouraged me to keep the baby and invited me to his house to meet his parents. His house was very grand, his parents were both doctors and I was intimidated, they both seemed nice and they were polite to me. We had dinner that night and I was served juice instead of wine like everyone else. I don't know what happened exactly but I know I woke up sore all over. I was scared because the room wasn't mine and everywhere was quiet, then the door to the room opened and Ian's mom walked in." She started crying again, " she told me that Ian had gone to college and that I needn't worry, that they had aborted my baby while I slept. They had drugged me and killed my baby. I had loved my baby . She told me to get my things and leave their house because her son would never end up with a whore like me", the sobs shook her body and my shirt was soaked through. I found myself wishing I was there to help her and protect her. I wished I could gut Ian just to make his parents pay.
"Shhh, it's alright dear, it's alright" I hugged her tighter, "you should rest now", I said, patting her hair and kissing it. Gradually, her sobs quieted and her breathing became even. I carried her to the room I found first and put her in bed. I got my keys and left the house with a heavy heart. I know for sure I'd kill anyone who tried to hurt Robin in any way close to that.
There's much more to perky Blondie than I could ever guess.
