"RING RING RING!!!"
I groan as I get up and search for the off button on my stupid alarm. I go downstairs, ready for
Breakfast. I can smell it already. When I'm downstairs, I'm greeted by my mom, Mae Chang, and a plate of white rice, spicy kimchi, and fried eggs; my favorite Korean dish. Yes, I'm Korean American and I love my Korean culture. I try my best to be the perfect Korean daughter for my mother because after my father's death, she really has been hard on me. I can only imagine how different, and difficult it was without her husband around to help raise their 2 year old daughter, alone. Even though I do not know my father, I love him, and the reason why is because the romantic, and funny stories my mom would tell me as a child.
"Joh-eun achim eomeoni" (Good morning mother in Korean)"Joh-eun achim" (good morning)
"Breakfast smells good mom, as always and I see you made my favorite," I say while giving a warm smile.
My mother nods her head while eating. I grab chopsticks and start dipping my rice in my kimchi.
"What do you think about a vacation? A vacation would be nice, and I know just the best place to go," my mom says.I nod my head and wait for her to tell me where we may be going. She gets up from the table and gets a brochure from the kitchen counter. She hands it to me, and the first thing I see in big bold print letters is: SOUTH KOREA.
"Wow. Really? South Korea? But, that's so far."
My moms face goes from a smile, to a disappointed look.
"I just wanted to take you to meet family, and explore your culture, but I guess not" says my mother as she takes back the brochure.
"No, no, mom I do want to go, it's just, school and friends.""You learn the same stuff in South Korean schools, just in a different language."
I shrug and get up from the table, after finishing the last of my breakfast. "I know you'be been being bullied Konami, because of your culture, and because you're Asian." Says my mom. I stop in my tracks. "Savanna told me, and said that's why you've been so mopey, and depressed. This vacation will give you a chance to meet your halmeoni wa hal-beoji (grandma and grandpa in Korean) and possibly some new friends""I don't want new friends. I'm good with the ones I have, thank you."
"But, sweetie, you'd always tell me how you love Korean culture, and you wanted to visit your family there when you we're younger"
"No mom, I think we should stay here. Besides I was a child when I said that stuff. I'm 17 now, and there's no reason to go back to the past."
After that I walk upstairs without another word. I know it was a little mean to say, but I don't wanna leave the United States... At least not yet. I go into my room and change into some dark red jeans and a black netted crop top, with some black booties. I decide to let my black hair fall down my back today instead of putting it up. I grab my sunglasses, backpack, and go downstairs to tell my mother goodbye before I go.
"Annyeong" (goodbye) I say, but my mother completely ignores my goodbye, and puts the brochure in my hands.
"Mom I said I didn't wa-" she cuts me off
"Please atleast think about it Konami, please." I can see the desperation in her eyes. She really wants to go and see her family.
"I'll think about it" I say, and walk out the door.
I walk halfway up the street, and meet my best friend Savanna, and we continue to walk to school together.
"Why so glum?" She asks.
I stay quiet and continue walking, but when she's about to ask again, I show her the brochure.
"Wow, You're lucky. I wish I could go, but working at Walmart doesn't exactly buy you a passport and plane ticket to South Korea" She says.
"I wish you could go, but my mom probably wants it to just be her and I."
"Oh"
I start singing a song in Korean, by Got7, because they're my favorite kpop group. Savanna looks at me wide eyed."What?" I say.
"Out of all the years we've been best friends, I had no idea that you could sing. While you're in South Korea, you should try out for a kpop girl group."
