I love you

“I was such an idiot.” The tears streaming down her face seemed to be shining silver in the moonlight. Her hair was falling out of its bun in a messy manner and her eyes were red and puffy as she wiped them with the back of her sleeve. “Why… Why did I even bother?”

“Rin.” My words came out sharper than I meant them to be. Perhaps they were too harsh at such a fragile time for her, but the things I wanted to say from my heart were escaping. It was too late, I couldn’t hold back. “I need to tell you something.”

Rin looked up, her blue eyes met mine for a quick instant, “at… At a moment like this?” She shuffled her bare feet against the grass, I recognized her brown sandals a few feet away.

“Yes.”

Another tear traveled down her cheek, “can’t it wait? I just-”

“No, it really can’t.”

“You have to wait, okay? I can’t take this… I just got my heart broken and you can’t even act the least bit sincere?” The girl snapped at me, raising her voice as she grasped the hem of her shirt. Her sadness was slowly being replaced with anger. “You…. Why can't you just give me a hug and tell me it’ll go okay, not to give up? That one day he will be happy with  me!? That I’m good enough for him!”

“No. Because I’m an idiot… And I’m selfish.”

“What does that have to do with anything, Neru!? Leave! Just leave alone!” Her voice was trembling, “what could you possibly understand about love? About falling in love with someone you can never have? Do you know how painful it is to love someone and not have those feeling returned? It’s killing me and I-”

My heart was beating so fast at that moment, I thought it would burst. Without thinking clearly, I took a few steps forwards, clearing my mind of every single ounce of uncertainness. I reached my hand forwards and cupped her cheek, cutting the younger girl off from her words as I pressed my lips to hers.

The second our lips touched, a pang of electricity ran through my body, reassuring me that I was doing the right thing. It felt so natural. Kissing her. Kissing another girl. It didn’t bother me at all when her eyes shot open and she realized what was happening. How Rin’s face burned red, yet she didn’t pull away. And maybe, just maybe, in that second of pure love, she enjoyed it. And that gave me hope.

I was the one to break off the kiss a few seconds later, my hand still cupping her cheek as my gold eyes met her blue ones. I took in a deep breath.
