Chapter Nine- No More Falling
Violet paced in her room. Every now and then she looked out the window.
There were stars scattered across the sky and it was almost black above the houses. In the distance a faint blue haze floated on the horizon. It was getting darker.
Violet mashed her fingers together and stretched. She shuffled her feet. Then she walked to her dresser and looked at herself in the mirror.
Violet was dressed entirely in black. She wore black jeans and a tight black leather jacket. She tied up her hair in a pony tail. The she took it out and brushed it.
Violet looked at the clock. The ticking was driving her insane.
She tied her hair in a french braid. The she pulled it out roughly and tipped her head down, flipping her hair over her face. She shook it and flung it back the right way.
Whatever.
Violet looked at the clock for a second time. She painted on another coat of lipgloss and smiled and herself.
Then she looked at the clock again. Whatever i’m going now!
* * * *
Violet hung by her hands from the wall. She lifted her body high enough to see over the top and slowly shuffled side-ways along it.
Bathroom. No. No. Living room. Empty Bedroom. Bathroom. No . No. Don’t know what that is. Gym. Bathroom. Bedroom. Bathroom. Bedr-
“Looking for someone?”
Violet was so startled she almost fell off the wall. She hung limply there and her hands stung. Her position made it impossible to turn and see who the voice belonged to but she recognized it anyway.
Dropping down as gracefully as she possibly could. She turned around a little to fast and had to grab a particularly spiky bush to stop her tripping.
“Jake!” she murmured, a little more ecstatic to see him than she wanted to let on.
“Violet?” Jake whispered in response. “What are you doing here?”
It suddenly occurred to Violet that she hadn’t planned what she was going to say and had no idea what it was that she wanted to say.
“W-well” Violet faltered. “Never-mind me... What are you doing lurking around the lane?”
Jake’s eyes widened. Dammit she got me.
“Actually...” he breathed, preparing to voice the honest truth. “I was on my way to see...you...”
Jake beamed a cheesy smile at the end of his sentence. It made Violet blush and laugh instantaneously.
“Why were you coming to see me?” Violet asked sounding like an actress from a soppy soap-opera.
“Well.. why were you coming to see me?
“I asked first!”
“Very mature!”
“Says the guy who swims in the pool with his clothes on!”
Jake huffed. He knew she had won.
“I wanted to talk to you.” He mumbled, kicking a rock.
Violet’s heart was pounding against her chest. She wanted to tell it to shut up but she didn’t want Jake to think she was talking to him.
“What did you want to say.” Violet asked in a soft voice. She didn’t want to rush him in case he decided against telling her.
“Well..... i er...” Jake stuck is hands in his pockets. “Wait.”
Violet waited. Jake fished around in his jacket pockets until he finally found a scrunched up piece of paper.
Shaking his blonde hair over his face to try and hide his blush, Jake smoothed the paper and cleared his throat ready to read it.
Violet’s heart melted when she saw his hands shaking the paper.
“My name is Jake Green” his voice was shaking as he spoke, “I have always been a “Green” and i have always.. um.. disliked the.. ‘Reds’ He stopped and looked down at Violet to make sure she was still listening.
“Um.. So anyway i always.. didn’t... not.. wait........FffffffBloody!....-”
Jake scrunched the paper and tossed it over his shoulder. He put his hands on Violet’s shoulders.
“Look.” he said calmly. “ The thing is, I’m not good with all this soppy, speaking from your heart crap.”
Violet gulped. he was really close to ruining the moment.
“But....” Jake drew in a deep breath. “ Iv’e always thought all you ‘Reds’ are all messed up or something. But when i met you and we kissed and all that. I wanted...” Jake sighed. “I wanted to be...... with you. Your’e so.. clumsy.. and you do weird stuff but you’re just this funny.. hot... girl and you made me think.... Why do ‘Greens’ and ‘Reds’ still have to fight? You know? Why do we have to follow rules and risk our lives and stuff. It makes everything so complicated.”
Violet was sure her heart was beating so hard it was visible through her clothes but Jake kept talking.
“I don’t know...if you... want... this, but i... do... and i don’t care if your a ‘Red’ because you’re perfect to me and i’m sick of ha-”
Violet put her fingers over his mouth. He had made his point. She didn’t want to torture him anymore. Wrapping her arms around his shoulder’s she stood on her toes and looked in to his vivid grey eyes. Then, Violet leaned forward and brushed her lips against his.
Jake held the young woman close. He had been worrying about her so much since he last saw her. The girl falls off fences and down stairs. She was head-strong but clumsy at the same time. Jake wrapped her in his arms and stroked her chocolate curls. He was never going to let her fall again.
