Chapter 10-  Followed

Violet was thrilled. She couldn’t help it. She’d been sneaking out to see jake every-day for more than 2 months. Nowadays she hated being without his presence. Even if all they did was lay in the sun together. She thought about him every waking minute and dreamt about him while she slept. Everything was perfect. Well, almost perfect... She was still betraying her gang by seeing a “Green”. But who cares? What they don’t know, won’t kill them!

* * * *

The room was empty. A breeze blew the faded red curtains in and out. A queen sized bed with red satin pillows sat in the middle of the room. Beside it stood a mahogany bedside table. Out the window a thicket of trees made the sun soft and cool.

A girl in a red tank top and jeans tip-toed closer to the bedside table. There was a note next to the lamp. Scrawled in messy writing it said:

Today 2:00pm. Kavenagh lake.

The girl put the paper back down on the table.

I knew she’d been sneaking out!

She rapped her fingers on it’s wooden surface thinking. Then she stormed out of the room.

* * * *

Jake kissed the girl quickly before pulling her close and whispering in her ear.

“Did anyone see you?”

“No” Violet purred.

They lay down on the grass. For once in their lives the two teens weren’t “A Red and a Green” they were just, Violet and Jake.

Violet stopped smiling. She looked over at Jake. He had his eyes closed.

“Jake?” she mumbled, barley audible.

“Mhmmm.”

“We can’t keep doing this forever.”

Jake’s breathing halted for a second but his eyes remained shut.

“Why not?” he asked knowing he sounded like a child.

“Because it’s dangerous!

“What do you want to do then?” He asked with a clenched jaw. He hated leaving this girl for a day. He didn’t know what she was getting at. But jake knew he didn’t like it.

“I don’t know...”

“We...” Jake started “We could.. run away together?”

“What?!” Violet asked shocked.

“C’mon Vi! Don’t pretend like your’e not sick of it! Waking up each morning knowing you or one of your’e friend might die!”

Violet was unsure. She wanted nothing more than to be with Jake forever, but she couldn’t just leave...could she?

Jake waited for Violet’s response. He wanted to get out of his gang. It ruled his life. he wanted to be normal. To get a job and just live!

Eventually he heard a tiny voice next to him.

“Let’s go tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow is ‘Carousel’!” Jake chuckled. “You have to protect your’e family at least until then...”

“Oh” Violet had forgotten to tell Jake she was the target for ‘Carousel’. But she didn’t want him to worry! The guy fretted about her like she was made of glass.

“I’m....I’m the target for ‘Carousel”

Violet waited for him to respond. She had no idea how he would react but she knew   he wasn’t going to say Oh that’s great Vi, You’ll be fine!.

Violet was restless. Why wasn’t he answering her? Finally he muttered a retort.

“Screw ‘Carousel’.”

Violet giggled. "I love this guy!"

“You what?”

Violet’s eyes snapped open. Did he hear me? Did i say that out loud?

“Did you just say you love me?”

Violet couldn’t read anything in his voice. His expression was neutral. She closed her eyes and was about to mumble to kind of answer when a shadow immersed them in semi-darkness.

“OH MY GOD!” a familiar voice screeched from above where Violet and jake were lying. “WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?!”

Violet shot up. Jake remained lying stunned on the grass.

Violet didn’t have the faintest clue of what to say. Standing directly in front of her with her hands on her hips and a horrified expression on her face, was Bronte, Violet’s sister.

Violet looked down at Jake who was opening and closing his mouth soundlessly. He obviously didn’t know what to say either.

As Violet turned back to look at her sister. Something hit her hard across the face. A hot pain surged through her right cheek and her eyes began to water. Her sister had just slapped her.
