I lay on my bed listening to music. I was trying to get inspired for song lyrics, but nothing was coming to me. That was weird. I had found that it was natural for me that my lyrics just came out of nowhere. I didn't normally even have to try. It had been a long day. I missed the bus so I had to walk the whole way to the next bus stop for the late bus. And funny enough, I was late. So I ended up in detention. In maths class my pen exploded all over my book and I ended up with blue smudges all over my shirt. My water spilled everywhere in the canteen. And when I got off the bus I wanted to get chocolate in the shop to keep me from falling asleep - and they were out of chocolate! Are you actually kidding me? What kind of shop runs out of chocolate? And I got so much homework I didn't even have the time or energy to post a YouTube video.
So I lay there and just sang along to all my favourite songs. It was then that I heard a scream. It sounded like my mum. Oh my word, had something happened to mum? I ran downstairs and into the living room at lightning speed, only to find mum jumping up and down and laughing. "Oh, Mel, you're never going to believe this."

I sat at the table in the restaurant, staring at my family. They were all
rosy-cheeked and happy, as happy as I had seen them in a long time. I had been stunned when mum had told me we'd won ten million in a online competition she'd entered.I could still scarcely take it in. Our life was going to be very different now. I'd already told Jasmine and Megan, but no one else from school knew. I was going to have to tell them tomorrow. I would have to tell Charlie. I didn't know what he'd think - or if he'd even believe me. But I would try.

The next day in school I walked through the gate as confidently as I could. No one was going to believe me. They'd all say I was a liar. And I really didn't want that to happen. Jasmine believed me because my mum had told her mum, but Megan had seemed a bit sceptical. She did rush up to me and throw her arms round me when I got through the school gate. "Did you really win ten million last night or was it just a joke?" she whispered into my ear.
"No, I actually did. We'll, my mum did anyway." Megan still looked uncertain. "Really?" she asked. Now I started to get frustrated. That happens to me a lot. "You don't believe me? Right then, I'll prove it!The day after my mum gets the money, I'll give you a hundred pounds." Megan finally relented.
"Ok, fine, I believe you. Of course I do - you just don't really know what to think when your best friend rings you up to tell you they've gone and flipping won ten million!" So we both laughed and made up - and then ran to maths class as fast as we could go because we'd missed the bell!

I couldn't concentrate at all in maths class. I kept glancing across the room at Charlie, wondering when to tell him.

I eventually made up my mind and told him at lunch. "Wow, really. You're so lucky, Mel! Have you done everything nice yet?" I didn't bother telling him about my whole not believing in luck thing, because I'd started thinking maybe I was very lucky indeed. So I just hugged him very hard and said something about going out for dinner with my family.

On my way to my next class after lunch, I heard the most dreaded voice in the world. The voice of Lexi Valentine. "Oh hi there, Melanie!" she smiled sickeningly. That's what I hate most about her. She sounds so nice, so innocent, so friendly. Her full name was Alexia Kimberly Charlotte Valentine - even her name sounds so pretty! She has long, blonde curls past her waist, while my dark brown, straight hair is untameable. My tanned skin is covered in spots, even when I smother them in concealer. She's probably never even had to use concealer - her face is pale with rosy cheeks, and perfectly spot-free. She is tall and has a perfect figure, while I was always naturally small and so unnaturally skinny you could feel my ribs. Anyway, she approached me and I knew instantly that she'd caught wind of my "luck." She smiled that sickening smile and said, "I hear you've been telling everyone lies about winning a load of money, then?"
"My mum won it. In a competition."
"Oh really?" She laughed at me, and so did all her "friends." They weren't really her friends, they were just the "cool" people she wanted to follow her around. Chantelle, whose dad owns some computer company, Louise, whose mum owns a fashion line and Sapphire, whose parents are both famous for some thing or another.
Louise pointed at me and laughed. "I bet she couldn't even afford an entry fee for a competition!" Even though nothing they said was funny in the slightest, they all giggled and pointed the whole time I rolled my eyes and walked away.

That night I was lying on my bed when my mum walked into my room. "I have something to tell you," she said quietly, as she sat down on my bed. She took a deep breath. "Your dad and I, we want to do something really worthwhile with this money. We think it would be great to give all you kids an adventure - we want to travel with you. I mean, we've never even left the UK! That's why we've decided to move the family to Australia.
