Today was the first day I actually went out into Sydney. Although it would be my fifth Saturday here, I'd been busy at home unpacking and exploring every other weekend. I heard Jasmine's knock on my bedroom door. When I let her in she told me she wanted to go shopping. "Ok then," I promised. "I'll go shopping with you as long as we can go to the beach afterwards!"

The two of us went off to the bus stop with a huge beach bag bulging with towels and a picnic. I was wearing a light summer dress and sandals, while Jasmine was wearing a vest top and a short skirt. We needed to buy some new light clothes while we were out shopping. It was even warmer here than we had imagined - thirty eight degrees one day! We took the bus to the shopping centre and went into a load of different shops. By the time we got out of the shops, I had enough new clothes to fill a wardrobe and Jasmine had enough to make her own fashion catalogue! Then we walked down to the beach.

The beach was amazing! The sea looked so blue, the sand so golden. We spread a rug out on the sand and ate our picnic, before going for a swim in the sea (we had swimming costumes under our clothes). The sea was amazing - I hadn't swum in the sea since I moved house so many years ago, so it brought back so many memories. When we got out of the water and dried off, I walked over to a little wooden hut to get us drinks. Standing at the hut beside me was a tall boy with blonde hair. He was holding a surfboard and when he had got his drinks he turned to me. "Hey," he said to me, in a cute Australian accent. I looked up at him and got lost in his deep brown eyes. His skin was lightly tanned and it was obvious he spent most of his time on the beach. "Hello?" he repeated - and I suddenly realised I hadn't replied to him! "Oh, um, hi!" I stuttered. What was wrong with me? Why was I so nervous? "Listen, I know this sounds really weird, but are you interested in surfing?" he asked me. I felt so awkward. I mean, it was clear that everyone there was all sporty and fashionable and lived for beaches and surfing and stuff. I'd never done everything like that in my life, apart from going to the beach, obviously. I knew I couldn't surf at all, but for some weird reason I decided I wanted to try. "Yeah, I've never done it before but I'd love to try." He laughed. "Fantastic! I've been looking everywhere for beginner surfers! I'm giving lessons every Tuesday and Friday night and Saturday mornings right here on the beach. Could you come?" He looked at me expectantly.
"Well, I'd love to. But, the thing is I - I don't have a surfboard." I felt so stupid, but he just smiled. "Don't worry you can rent one." So I signed the list of names he handed to me. A very short list. "I take it you're not having much luck," I said sympathetically. He looked a bit worried at this. "You'll still come, won't you? You don't mind that it's just four people?" I shook my head. "Phew! Cause I could find millions of advanced surfers here, but I like it better working with beginners. It's better teaching someone something new than teaching them something they already know. And you learn new stuff from them too. I'll look forward to learning something from you." I could have stood there talking to him all day, but I couldn't have, cause at that moment Jasmine came running up. "Hey Melanie, have you got those drinks yet!" Then she saw the boy I'd been talking to. "Oh hi! Who's this then Mel?" I suddenly felt really terrible when I realised I didn't know his name! But luckily he stepped forward, shook her hand and said, "Hey there! I'm Noah, are you a friend of Melanie's? You wouldn't be interested in coming to surfing lessons with her?" Jasmine stared at me as if I was nuts. "Are you nuts?" she cried. "You've never surfed in your life!"
"Don't worry," Noah explained. "It's only a beginner class." We eventually talked her into coming to the class. And then we had to go back up the beach to our spot. "When'd you meet that Noah guy. He's soooo cute! Wait! Do you fancy him? What about Charlie?" "Calm yourself down!" I told her. "No one fancies anyone else, I'm still in love with Charlie and he's just a randomer that asked me to come to a surfing class."__________________________
Jasmine kept on at me about Charlie and Noah, even though I told her to forget it. But the more classes I went to, the more I began to doubt myself - and my relationship with Charlie. He still phoned me every night, wanting to know everything that went on in my life. But he just seemed like everything else from my old life - a distant memory.
