Chapter 3

She could feel it.  The cold sweat, the hives breaking out.  Shit.  Something was tweaking her.

"If not from you then from something around you."

"Back off a minute dude."  That was Teena, she was watching Kenzie with a curious look on her face.  She could feel it too.  Sometimes it happened and other times it didn't.  Teena very rarely allowed herself to feel anything.

Law shook his head at Teena, not even looking at her.  Just gazing into Kenzie's eyes.

Law inhaled deeply and blew his breath out slowly against her face.

Kenzie felt her eyes do a half-lid blink and she sighed softly.  Sensuous.  This man was slowing down her reaction to the spirits.

She felt herself sway slightly as he reached out a hand to steady her.  It was like an electric shock, the great magnetic force that was just... them.

They jumped apart breathing erractically.

“You are one dangerous woman. Aren't you?”

Kenzie looked at the girls and back quickly. He was studying her intently and she suddenly couldn't think. She was fidgeting like a school girl with her first crush. She did an inward sigh. And hell, what was the conversation again? Oh yeah.

“Dangerous how?”

He just stared at her like she'd grown a second head.

“It's a metaphor. Not literally, figuratively.” He shook his head and turned towards his work station.

Well she was literally dangerous but how could she go into that rant without seeming like someone that just esacped from the looney bin. She'd been called crazy so much that she had began to believe it until she found the validation she needed.

Great, now she felt like a total idiot. A bimbo in her blonde highlights without a thought beyond fashion in her head.

She swallowed hard and closed her eyes. Stemming the hurt. She couldn't help it. She was a sensitive and this was a momentous minute in her life and she was blowing it like next weeks paycheck. She grimaced and shook her head silently.

“You know what Mr. Tattoo man, change of plans. I'm going first. I just remembered that Kenzie promised to buy me a Cafe Mocha from that snazzy coffee shop across the way.” Regan sauntered over to the tattoo table and plopped down. Looking to Kenzie she smiled softly.

“Come on Kenzie let's go do the coffee thing.” Teena took ahold of her elbow and pulled on her gently and started guiding her from the room.

Teena held tightly to her coat as they walked outside.

“Tell me. Is this how you envisioned it? The meeting and exchange?” She sounded a bit sour.

“No. It doesn't work like that with me. I'm not that well developed. I just have flashes of images, tattoos, marks, things. I have intuition, instincts, and little “nudges”, so to speak in the mind when something needs to be seen, done, or said. Crap Teena, you know this.” Kenzie pulled her arm from the grasp and stopped to look at her friend.

Teena was looking everywhere but at her.

“What gives Teena? What is going on?”

“It's just that I have trouble believing in it. But back there in the shop, I felt what you felt. I felt the cold chills down my neck and the hair standing up on my neck. A whisper against my skin.” Her friend took a shuddering breath as tears popped in her eyes.

“It's okay sis.”

“No. No it's not. I don't want this. I think that I am going to stop studying, turn it off. You know? I am not as strong as you or as willing to be a plaything for supernal.”

Kenzie took a step back from her friend. The emotional level was getting too high and she was afraid she may take on some of it.

“You are way stronger than me. Your instincts are way more defined and in tune than mine. You are just scared.”

“OF COURSE I'm fucking scared. Hello? You just met your vision. The vision that could make or break you. A vision of either happily-ever-after or a big fuck you. Ha! Scared. You should be too!” She turned away muttering under her breath.

Kenzie took a calming breath.

“Of course I am Teena. I feel like a crazy person most of the time and then on numerous occasions I act on impulse from someone or something else. I'm petrified. That's what I am. Darkhorse, or Law, whatever, I don't know what all this means. I just know it is something I have to do. He is someone that is part of my future, no matter what that is.” She hung her head and swallowed down tears.

She had no idea what Lawren would be to her or what purpose they were even intertwined at this point. The visions were erratic and non-nondescript at best.

She sighed.

Walking between the worlds meant walking alone for most of her life.  Kenzie rarely let anyone in past the comfort zone.  These girls were her friends but only one knew absolutely everything about her.  She didn't feel safe, ever.  She felt alone - even in a crowd of people.  Ridiculed for being different - that didn't bother her, well too much.. she did fear half the time that she was crazy.

"Look Kenzie, I am frustrated and sometimes I want to quit.  You know I won't.  You know as well as I do that we don't choose this.  If it was easy then everyone would be doing it."

Kenize smiled at her.  It certainly wasn't easy.
