"You've got to be joking me," Pete stared at Patrick in complete surprise. "We're doing Romeo and Juliet this year?" His eyes sparkled in excitement and Patrick rolled his eyes at his best friend.

"Everybody saw it coming, Pete. Mr. Joseph has been hinting at it for about a month now," Patrick teased him.

The two boys sat at the lonely lunch table, being ignored by all the other kids who were busy sitting with their own friends.

"You are going to try out, aren't you, Pete?" Patrick asked, taking a bite of his sandwich, smirking at him.

"W-what?!" Pete stuttered, staring at him in shock. "Me trying out for the school play? Don't be ridiculous, Patrick!" He shooed him off, still looking flustered.

"You could totally pull off Romeo!" Patrick teased him, chewing his sandwich.

"Sure..." Pete rolled his eyes. "The shy kid who trips over his own feet and would faint at being in front of an audience. Seems legit," he nudged Patrick, gently. "Besides, everybody already knows who's going to get the roles of Romeo and Juliet," he rolled his eyes.

"Do we, now?" Patrick looked at him, curiously. "Do tell, Peter!"

"Mikey Way and Alicia Simmons, obviously," Pete told him, softly. "Why wouldn't they be chosen? They're already a couple in real life and they have amazing chemistry," he added, voice getting even quieter.

"Hey, we don't have to talk about it," Patrick assured him, quickly. He knew of Pete's hopeless crush on Mikey. Pete had confessed his love for Mikey to Patrick by accident, when he got drunk one night.

"He'd be an amazing Romeo, don't you think, Patrick?" Pete sighed, leaning his arm on the table. "His dreamy eyes and his powerful voice..." Pete broke off, sighing gently.

Patrick stared at him in amusement. This was the only time when Pete really got emotional. Patrick was definitely amazed at Mikey's power of turning Pete completely into mush.

"Hey, guys!" A voice came from behind them and Pete froze, eyes tightening around his lunch tray. He'd recognize that beautiful voice anywhere. He turned around, smiling.

"M-Mikey!" He grinned, feeling his feet begin to tap nervously.

"Hi!" He grinned, holding his lunch tray at his waist. "Do you mind if I sit with you guys? Everywhere else is pretty full," he grinned, hopefully at him.

"Here!" Pete replied, immediately, jumping up from his seat. "Have my chair!"

Mikey stared at him for a moment in shock.

"O-oh, are you sure?" He asked, cocking his head in a way that made Pete wish he could photograph that face and keep it forever.

"Yes, please, I insist!" He grinned.

"Thank you, Pete," he smiled, thankfully, setting his lunch tray down next to Patrick, leaving the space next to him open.

"No problem! I-"

"Mikey!" A voice interrupted Pete, and they turned to see Alicia walking swiftly towards them, smiling brightly. She immediately sat her tray down on the other side of Mikey's, leaving Pete to go sit on the other side of the table.

"I can't believe Mr. Joseph actually took my suggestion for doing Romeo and Juliet this year!" Alicia babbled, a slight blush on her cheeks. "We're going to do absolutely wonderful!" She smiled at Mikey, fondly.

Pete stared at them, steaming quietly. He stabbed at the meat on his plate and could feel Patrick's eyes on him. He sighed, gently.

"Nobody's even tried out for the parts, yet, Alicia," Mikey pointed out, grinned. "There's no guarantee that we'll even be Romeo and Juliet!" he added, smiling.

"Don't be silly," she scoffed at him. "We're obviously going to get the lead roles. We're the best actors in this school and we're going to be Romeo and Juliet!" She insisted. "After all, I am the one who suggested it," she grinned.

"Yeah..." Mikey sighed. He turned to Patrick and Pete. "How about you guys? Are you both trying out?"

"I think it might be fun!" Patrick nodded. "I really kind of want a minor role, to be honest," he added.

"What about you, Pete?" Mikey swiveled around to face him. Pete felt a blush begin creeping up his neck, and he smiled back.

"No, I don't think I will," he admitted. "I'm still too shy to preform in front of crowds," he added, not meeting Mikey's gaze.

"Well, you should try it!" Mikey smiled at him.

Pete nodded at him, heart beginning to beat quicker.

"Do you know when tryouts are being held, Mikey?" Patrick asked, cocking his head.

"The end of October," Mikey grinned. "So we still have a few weeks to figure out a monologue," he smiled, assuringly. "Do you think it would be too weird to do an actual scene from Romeo and Juliet for my monologue? Or..."

"Be original, Mikey," Alicia chided at him. "You should do something from Hamlet or something. You know Mr. Joseph eats that stuff up."

"I'll think about it," Mikey smiled. The bell rang and Pete stood up quickly, picking up his lunch tray with him.

For the first time, he was happy to leave lunch. He wouldn't have to stare at Mikey and Alicia together. It hurt too much, because he was in love with Mikey. And Alicia had to ruin everything. He and Mikey used to be inseparable in preschool and elementary school.

Then, as most friends do, they grew apart. They still enjoyed the same things, and had many similar interests. Mikey, being the extrovert, went to the popular end of the spectrum. He didn't quite catch up to his brother, Gerard, who everybody loved, but he was close. Gerard had been in a terrible accident his junior year, so he had to repeat his junior year, leaving him a year ahead of everyone in his grade.

Pete still didn't know exactly what happened, but according to the school rumors, Gerard was hit by lightning, and there are still scars all along his back. Another rumor says he was in a car accident. Gerard never proved any of these rumors, and Pete didn't ask.

Pete, being the introvert, shied away from the spotlight, and went to the nerdy end of the spectrum. He still loved theatre, almost as much as Mikey. The only problem was he had terrible stage fright. He worked behind the scenes instead, and memorized the plays.

Pete had a knack for memorizing things he looked at a lot. For example, he's memorized almost all of Romeo and Juliet, he memorized many parts of his favorite books, and he memorized Mikey's face.

Right now, he was very much like Romeo, who was very much in love with the idea of being in love.
