I squint my eyes as the sun shines in them. I look to the side to see Ed snoring under the blankets. I stand and stretch lifting my arms above my head. I yawn and walk into the kitchen. I breath in and grab a apple from the bowl in the middle of the table. I take a bite and realize "my Shira" I whisper and run to my room. I tip toe into my room. Avoiding all the creaking boards and peaking under my bed. The egg layed motionless. I frown and pick my bag up and leave the room. I set my bag down and get dressed. I pull on my boots and walk outside with my bag in my hands. A gust of wind blows on me when I open the door. I shiver and walk out.
I walk into the barn and set the bag down. I feed the horses and after awhile of chores I sit on the haystack and look at the green egg. I rub my hand on it feeling it's warmth I sigh and set the egg down and lean against the wooden pillar. After a few minutes I stand walking over to my horse running my hand through her mane. I jump as I hear a cracking noise. I turn and look at my egg and gasp. The egg cracks and bursts. I stare wide eye as a ember green baby dragon comes out. I stare in amazement as the big blue eyes land on me. It lets out a squeak and sneezes. I smile at it and it comes up to me and rubs against my hand. I pick it up and set it on my lap. It looks at me and lets out a small growl. "Are you hungry?" I ask. It jumps up and down happily. I look around for some food. What does a dragon eat? I think to myself. I walk over and pick him up. He perches on my shoulder and we walk to the house. I open the door and walk in my mother was sitting in a chair petting Esmerelda. "Mother he hatched." I say as I smile. She looks over and almost jumps. Panic and sadness crosses her face. "What's wrong?" I ask. "Your Shira is a dragon?" She says in concern. "Yeah, why?" I raise my brow and look at her. Esmerelda squawks "because yo-" she gets cut off as my mother pins her beak together. "Wait what?" I ask. "It's nothing dear what is it you need." She asks quickly changing the subject. "Oh well he is hungry and I don't know what to feed him." My dragon climbs on my head and sits. I smile at it and take him off. "Well let's see here" my mother says. "I think he would like small prey like Esmerelda here." My mom says "I will go get something for him if you want." Esmerelda squawks. "Ok thanks" she jumps off the table and flys out the window. "I'll be right back." My mom says as she enters her room where my father was putting on his boots. She slowly shuts the door. I stand and sneak over to the door and listen to what they are saying. "James, the egg hatched." My mother says "and it's a Dragon" there was a long pause and then my father spoke. "We have to hide her somewhere." He says with pain in his voice. My dragon climbs on my shoulder. "The guards are going to come and take her away to the dragon riders to fight the Kin and with her only being seven. How can they do that to such young children?" My mother said her voice was shaking and you could tell she was crying. I jump as talons grip my shoulder. "you know it's not nice to eavesdrop on people" Esmerelda says
"I wasn't eavesdropping." I say quietly. "Mmmhm" she says "well I got him some food" she says as she points to a mouse that was trying to find a way off the table. My Dragon squeaks for joy as he jumps off my shoulder and lands on the mouse taking a big bite and swallowing it whole. I sit down and look at my dragon. "What should I name him?" I ask out loud. "They come with names you goof" Esmerelda says with a chuckle. "Yeah but he hasn't said a word yet." I say looking at her "well he is still a baby and you haven't done the bonding yet." She says as she ruffles her feathers. "And how do you do that?" I ask "I'll show you" she says as she flaps out the window. "Come on" I say and gesture to my shoulder. He jumps on and hooks to my shirt so he won't fall. I walk out to where Esmerelda was perched on a tree. "Ok first you got to get him to fly." She says "that's how I started. Come on" she says as she flys off into the direction of the field. I chase after her with my dragon in my hands. He started flapping as I run and I start pushing him up. "Come on come on fly" I yell smiling. My dragon squawks and goes up. He starts flying around in the air. I look up at him and smile Esmerelda flys by him telling him directions on how to fly. He starts to fly down towards me. "Whoa slow down I say as he came closer and faster" I hold my arms out ready to catch him. He comes and runs right into me sending me on my back. I start laughing as we lay there "are you two alright?" Esmerelda asks I give her a thumbs up and stand up. I look up the hill and see my cousin standing there. I look at him questioningly. My dragon squawks in fear as Eds huge snake attacks him. I pick him up and kick the snake away. Esmerelda swoops down and picks it up and flings it away. "What are you doing?" I yell at the snake. It hisses at me and slithers back to Ed. I follow with my dragon on my shoulder. "What was that for?" I ask Ed anger striking my voice. "What the heck is that?" He says pointing to my dragon. "It's my Shira" I say calmly. "What, I thought you said you didn't get one." He says confused "well I lied like you do to me all the time." I say walking off to the house "do you know what they do to dragon wielders? Well they take them away from their homes and makes them serve the King for the dragon rider army" I look at him "well I don't care." I storm off to the house.
My mother and father looked at me when I entered the house "how about you sit down" my father says I nod and sit. "So do you remember your grandmother?" My mother asked. "Yes a little bit, she was in the army wasn't she?" I asked. My mother nodded "she was forced to go to the dragon riders army because her Shira was a dragon." She says softly. I nod "and what does this have to do with anything." I ask. "word might get around that you summoned a dragon and then the guards will come to get you." My father says abruptly. "What that won't happen to me. They won't find out, they won't know." Panic starts rising in my stomach. My Dragon starts whining feeling my panic. My mother gets me a glass of water. "It's ok dear you will do fine." I stand up and hug them, then I went outside. Esmerelda was perched on a tree pecking at the bark. I walk past her and into the barn. I curl up on the haystack and cry myself to sleep.
