Peter used to be the first one down in camp every morning; however, since you moved in with him, he often found more reasons to stay in bed. Today he made an exemption since there were adult guests leaving the camp that morning, and he didn't need them talking any lost ones into accompanying their departure from the island. He begged you to come down with him so he wouldn't be lonely, and you complied. Soon the guests left their tents and entered the main camp.
"Sleep well?" Peter asked David and Snow with an authoritative tone while his arms were crossed over his chest.
"Yes, your accommodations were wonderful. We are very grateful." Snow answered for the both of them. Not-So-Charming curtly nodded. He must have had a rough night's rest in this new environment.
Next Emma and Regina emerged together, since they had shared a tent. Lastly Hook and Henry arrived.
"Nice to see you all made it through the night." Peter spoke with a bit of venom lacing his words. His simple statement almost seemed like they were not meant to have a peaceful night's rest. His tone earned him a quick jab in the side as a reminder to be good.
"Yes, thank you for your hospitality." Regina responded with a slight tone of resentment. She then went straight for the seating around the campfire, so Henry, Emma, and Hook were inclined to follow. Snow remained by her husband's side waiting for him to move to a seat around the fire, but he stood staring at Peter.
"Alright, I'm tired of this." Peter huffed. "What is your problem with me? Why do you keep glaring at me? That's not very charming of a thing to do."
David snapped out of his gaze. "I'm sorry I didn't realize. It's just I'm trying to figure out who you remind me of, and I think I finally know." Peter raised an eyebrow. "Snow," David turned to his wife. "Do you remember
Simon from the Kingdom West of the Enchanted Forest?""Ummm...ye-yes! He does look just like him. I knew he looked familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it." Snow replied. You gave them both a confused expression to ask for more information about this Peter Pan doppelganger.
"He's the King of the Western Kingdom. He's also a good friend of ours." David elaborated. "And the funniest thing is that his family's name is Panning."
"That's ironic." You laughed and looked up at Peter to see his reaction. His visage was not one of amusement; rather, his face had been drained of color, and his eyes seemingly lost their light in his somber expression. "What's wrong Peter?"
"Do you know them?" David asked cautiously.
"Yes." He took a deep breath. "I have to go." Then he immediately retreated back into the treehouse, without a single explanation or word more.
"What's wrong with him?" David inquired while looking off in the direction he left.
"I'm not sure."
"Has he ever spoken about his family?"
"He said his father was a Royal Navy officer, and his mother was a dance instructor."
"But nothing about a royalty bloodline?"
"No, nothing about that." Your eyebrows creased in confusion.
"Why would he lie about that, if he did?" Snow asked.
"I don't know. All he ever told me was that they died in a storm along with a crew of fellow Navy officers."
"Then how did he end up in Neverland?" Snow continued.
"I-I don't know that either. I just never asked him because he struggles talking about his past. He had a hard time talking about his parents for a minute, so I never pushed him. I guess it didn't seem important to ask."
"Maybe now it's time to ask him. He knows your story now. You should know his. At the very least you ought to know. He doesn't have to share it with all of us, but you are his wife after all, and if he'd tell anybody, it'd be you." David commented and Snow agreed with a nod.
"I should go talk to him now." You said while still in a state of confusion.
* * *
"Peter..." You started after quietly walking into your shared room. He was sitting on the bench by the window with his body turned show he could look out. You approached him silently and sat adjacent. "How do you know that family Peter?"
He sniffled and drew his lower lip into his mouth. "I don't know any of them personally, but they are my relatives."
"You never told me your family was royalty. Why?"
"I almost told you, but I decided against because I didn't want to have to talk about them anymore than what I was willing to tell you." His head was facing down and both his hands were in tight fists.
"Alright, you don't like talking about your past, but you kind of have to now. I mean, I feel like I have a right to know. You know my history. You've even known my biological family as long as I have. I don't hide things from you, so why do you hide things from me?"
"I'm not trying to hide things. I don't want to hide anything from you. I just don't want to fall apart in front you." He rose from his hunched over position to show his eyes were red.
"Peter, you don't have to worry about that." You brought one arm around his back and the other looped around his arm to pull him towards you. "Why would you think that would matter to me?"
"I just feel like a burden. You shouldn't have to take care of me like this."
"We care for each other. That's what we signed up for." You laughed softly to try and lighten the mood. "I want to hear about your family. Since I can't meet them, then at least tell me about them. Please." You tugged gently on his arm and looked into his eyes.
He adverted his eyes for a moment and wetted his lips before speaking, "Well as an only child, I grew quite close to them. Even with their busy schedules, they put me first. My father was the Prince and soon to be King, but he needed a Queen. Unfortunately he was a terrible dancer as I told you before. Now my grandmother thought he couldn't possibly ensnare a proper bride without proper dance etiquette, so she brought in the finest dancer she could find in the Kingdom. Before my father could have a ball thrown to find a suitor, he fell in love with my mother. Thankfully my grandparents loved her too, so they didn't prevent them from marrying. Then my father was King, I eventually came along, and my life was very happy. The Kingdom lived in peace."
"That's a wonderful love story." You commented and rested your chin on his shoulder.
"Yeah it is." He replied. "My father told me that he didn't think he needed a Queen to be able to rule, and there's truth to that, but she made him a better man and therefore, a better ruler. He said he didn't realize there was something missing in his life until he met my mother." He smiled. "Now I know how he felt."
Even after knowing him for this long and receiving countless compliments from him, they still made you blush, and every time that happened, he'd get the same knowing smug smirk on his face. "Alright, continue with your story please."
He sighed satisfyingly, "Fine."
