Chapter 2: Invasion

We knew they would come, we didn't know when.
We knew we had to prepare, we didn't know how.

15 April 10:38 AM 2118
Music filled my ears, like how water fills a glass.  I was lying on my bed, with my wireless headphones set firmly in my ears like they were concrete, thinking about studying but I didnt want to. My bed was soft and molded to my body, it was extremely comfortable.  I got up to look out my window above me head, I saw the trees dancing in the wind and the other houses that surronded mine. Behind the trees I could see the city a couple kilometres away. I collapsed onto my bed once again.  I heard a massive explosions outside, it sounded distant, but close at the same time.
"WHAT THE HELL?" I screamed.  I shot up from my bed and bolted downstairs.
"Mum, Dad, did you hear that fricking explosion??" I asked
"yea, we did" they said together, I could hear panic and fear in their voices. Something wasnt right my parents have never been scared before.  I ran back up to my bedroom and flicked on my Holovision.  As soon as a turned it on there was  breaking news alert. 

"We are at the sight of the scene right now in central Washington.  There has been no damage to the building damage and fortunately no lives lost, However we do not know the source of the explosion." 

The news reporter's head darted up, his body drained of colour like a bath draining from water. The camera-man pointed the camera towards the sky, it took a second to focus, but eventually I saw it.  In the sky, above Washington D.C, was what looked like an alien spacecraft entering our atmosphere.

"Are you getting this?" The news reporter asked, "Well i think we now know the source of the explosion, it was the thing up there entering the atmosphere"

The news stopped and the normal broadcast returned. I switched the holovision off and looked out the window, I could see the alien ship from my window.  It looked small but that was probably because it was far away.  The ship looked metalic, and had a fiery outline around it, from entering the atmosphere.  I ran down stairs again and my Dad was holding my mum in his arms, she was having a panic attack. 

My whole family, ducked our heads as a Jet-fighter did a low pass overhead, from the sound of it, it was probably 4-5 of them.  My parents sat down on the living room lounge. I started a slow walk to the front door, scared of what i might see.  I eventually got to the door.  I opened it, it seemed heavy, i was probably weak from fear.  I walked outside and saw the whole sky littered with squadrons of F-58's and F-62's.  I saw the american flag on them so that calmed me a bit.  I turned to look at the ship, it had gotten closer, it looked really big now.  I saw small wholes open in the sides of the craft And what I saw horrified me.  Hundreds, if not Thousands of fighter's came out of the 'mothership'. 

The american jet's broke formation and started attacking the alien invaders, I saw multiple explosions close to the mothership.  The Jet's were darting everywhere in the sky but the alien fighters were like flies, weak but incredibly hard to hit.  At the front of the mothership something started charging, light was gathering at the front of the weapon, it was going to FIRE A LASER.  It fired the laser directly above my house for 5 straight seconds, it was deafening me with a moustrous low frequency hum.  Five of our jet's where disintergrated instantly like they were nothing, but the laser partly hit a jet that was firther away, ripping the wing off like a chicken wing.  The jet started falling towards me, tumbling in the air.  I sprinted as fast as i could to get inside the house.  The jet smashed into my street with a giant thud, and it kept sliding a couple metres until in came to a screaching halt.

I ran back outside and to the jet, which had partially caught on fire.  I pulled the emergency canopy eject and pulled the unconscious pilot out, his forehead had a massive gash on it, he must have hit his head. I pulled him away from the jet and into my driveway.  The jet exploded.  I got knocked to the ground by the shockwave and could feel blood coming out of my ears, my eadrums popped.  I hit my head on the ground and could see stars in the sky like in the old fashioned movies I used to watch. 

After a couple minutes I got up and pulled the still unconscious pilot into my house.

"MUM GET THE FIRST AID KIT." I yelled

I could hear someone fumbling around in the kitchen.  My mum was by my side a couple seconds later, wrapping a bandage around the pilot's head. The Low hum stated again, and i could hear more explosions outside. Once she was done, we dragged him onto our lounge to rest. I went back outside and saw that both sides were weak. I saw a B-5 stealth bomber speeding towards the mothership. We were preparing our final assualt.

5 F-62's joined the bomber and the went into formation. As the got closer each of the F-62 launched 4 waves of one missle at the mothership. The first wave hit, nothing happened, the ship was shielded. The second wave hit. The shield looked weaker. The 3rd wave hit and the air around the mothership vibrated like a shockwave, The shield had collapsed.

The F-62's broke off, and continued attack the alien fighters. The B-5 Bomber continued on. The B-5's bomb bay doors opened up and inside was a nuclear fission bomb.

They where going to nuke the mothership.

The B-5 launched the nuke at the mothership. My eyes could not leave the nuclear missle. It ripped through the air like a knife and it was heading straight for the alien ship. It hit the surface of the ship and kept going. I couldnt see it anymore, It didnt explode, i thought it malfunctioned. I thought wrong. The ship began to shake voilently, suddenly it imploded as its energy reactor was exploded by the nuclear bomb. Luckily the energy shield from the ship, had regenerated enough to contain much of the explosion and fallout. The rest of the alien fighters flew straight up into space and they disapeared from my view.

I walked back inside and noticed that the pilot was awake and talking to my parents. I just stod there leaning against the doorframe of the living room.

"The message that people heard exactly a year ago, 'prepare' , we figured that it was aliens but we didn't prepare, we didnt do anything, we just continued on with our normal lives and pretended it never happened." I heard him say

" we should have done something, we should have prepared, we could have prevented this." He continued.

"Why didnt we?" I asked, and everyone turned to look at me.

"No one though it mattered, everyone thought it was a prank from some 19 year old" he replied

I didn't say anything after that , and i just dropped my head and looked at the floor.

" Anyway, it doesnt matter, we survived and we will rebuild.  We will learn from the alien ships and build a stronger army incase they come again." he said as he got up.

He walked passed my parents as he said "thanks for fixing me up and taking care of me."
He walked passed my and patted me on the back and said, "thanks for pulling me from my plane, you saved my life."
"My name is Alex by the way," He said as he walked out of our house.
"bye Alex" I replied as a waved goodbye to him.

I dropped out of school the next day and joined the air force because I believed Alex, I believed they would come again, and I wanted to help this time.

I was right,

They are coming.
