Tris
The room was designed with long tables and benches. Food lay upon tables with warm steaming rising from the top. It looks so good. I lick my lips in lust and desire. I place myself on a table next to Christina. Al, Peter, Will and Molly join us. Great, Peter and his 'Crew' are here. Peter grins at me. I ignore him and stare at the food in front of me. Hamburgers and vegetables lay upon the perfectly polished table. Everyone dives into the food without using manners. I use a metal fork and pick up a hamburger. I look at it, it looks strange but inviting. Christiania glances at me with weird eyes. She asks.
"You've never had a hamburger before?"
I look down and reply.
"I have, it's just I've never eaten one".
Will intervenes. I wish he didn't though.
"Yeah that's right, Abnegation only eat plain food with plant based diets"
I roll my eyes; he used to be from Erudite. Of course he was. Christina laughs so does Peter and Molly. Al doesn't join in. He just smiles so no one will question him. Christina questions Will.
"Which text book did you swallow smartass?"
Will looks taken back, I guess no one has challenged him before. Will acts all casual as he replies.
"Oh I'll let you worry about that Candor and besides, I thought you type of people were good at telling if someone is lying or not"
"Well Will, I am good at getting the truth from people, but when they are being selfish and ignorant, I don't bother"
Peter looks over to me. Christina mentioned Will being selfish and ignorant. I'm guessing he will ask me what I think of this. And he does.
"So Stiff, since Christina pointed out to Will about his bad qualities, what do you think? Considering Stiffs are selfless"
I haven't got the guts to reply, I haven't got the strength to speak the words I desperately want to say. I want to say, 'But I'm not a Stiff! I may have been brought up to be and caring but guess what? I can do whatever I want and you won't stand before me, blocking me of my freedom!
I stay quiet. I don't bother to speak for the rest of the convocation. I keep to myself. That's when a man appears and sits seats away from me. I feel awkward. I take a glance at him. He looks kinder than Eric I have to say, a friendly smile on his face that won't fade away. Piercings don't plaster his face like Eric's nor tattoos on his face. But I see that he has a tattoo on his neck, well like a small piece of it. I look away. The others are still talking; I still refuse to join the convocation. That's when Will starts on a subject about Erudite. The man with the tattoo takes interest into the subject, he says.
"So you were from Erudite?"
Will looks shocked that one of the Dauntless asked him a question. I can't say I'm surprised; it was going to happen sooner or later, after all knowledge is power. Will replies with a shaken voice.
"Umm yeah..."
The man smiles and returns back to his food. I can't help but ask him something. I want to ask him.
"So were you a transfer or Dauntless born?"
He gives me a kind look. I thought he'd throw his food at me. But. No. He just replies to me so sweetly.
"I'm not really allowed to say, it's not my place to, I wish I could but it's complicated, sorry"
"Oh its fine, I was just curious"
I shouldn't have said that...
"Curious? Normally new transfers keep to themselves; I have to say I'm impressed".
I can't help but smile. I feel like I should know more about this complete stranger who just complimented me. Before I could, Eric appears from behind the man. His whispers make me feel uncomfortable.
"Four why are you talking to that piece of filth?"
"Chill Eric, and by the way, she isn't filth, she's quite sweet actually".
"She is far from sweet Four, don't talk to her, she's trouble"
"Just leave her alone, she hasn't done anything wrong"
"Yet... anyway Max needs you"
Four? Is that his name? Strange but cool. Four smiles at me as he rises from his seat.
"It was nice talking to you umm..."
"Tris"
"Cool name Tris, goodbye".
I watch Four as he walks away, he's like an angel. But Eric's the devil. All of a sudden he turns his head to smile at me. Oh God do I smile back? Okay don't be creepy. I manage to pull off an average smile, so he doesn't have to leave with an image of a weird face in his mind.
"Looks like you have a fan Stiff"
Stupid Peter always got something to say about me.
"Peter back off, even though we've moved fractions, it doesn't mean you have to act the same way you always have"
Thanks Christina.
"In what way Christina?"
"You always treat people badly. You have no respect for anyone. You always think your better than everyone else. Truth is you're not."
I can feel Peter's blood boiling. His open hands turned to fists. He bangs his fist on the table causing drinks and food flying. The impact of his anger instantly drew all attention to us. I could see Eric's face in crowd of people, his glaring eyes looking at me. Then I see Four appearing from a door, his face portraying more concern than confusion. He looks over to me; his mouth quietly says the words:
'Are you okay?'
I nod and smile, so he doesn't have to come over. Eric shouts,
"Now what's going on here?"
Peter sits there frozen, unable to respond. Eric repeats his words again,
"What is going on?"
