In any roleplay book, the first chapter will usually either be the introduction or the rules. Both are necessary to read and under NO circumstances should you skip them.
the intro/info page
Something I will suggest is not joining a fandom roleplay that you aren't very familiar with. If you have only watched one movie or read half a book of an extensive fandom, then chances are you won't know what is all going on, especially if it is your first time roleplaying. Make sure you're very familiar with the fandom before joining!
You can figure this out by reading the information or introduction page in their book. That chapter usually contains all the necessary information and background for the roleplay.
the rules
Rules will sometimes vary from book to book, but the majority of them contain the same principles:
-No OP Characters
no overpowering characters who can do everything effortlessly
-No Controlling Other People's Characters
only control your character and what they do/say/think
-No Smut or Mating scenes
If you ever see this allowed in a roleplay, it goes against Wattpad policy and you should report it
-No cussing (depends on the roleplay)
-No killing other people's characters without their permission
don't have your character kill another character unless you agree with their owner about it
-No chain comments (depends on the roleplay)
-Your character can only be in one place at a time
don't be roleplaying your character in two places at onceSometimes the owner will post a message that says something like: "break one rule, get a warning, break it again, get banned" or something along those lines. If you accidentally make a mistake (especially if it's your first time) just apologize and pay attention next time, but please please don't break rules on purpose. It's rude and disrespectful and most roleplay owners will ban you.
Rules are an important part of roleplays, as they define and limit what will be tolerated. Good rules make roleplaying fun for everyone, as long as everyone respects and obeys them.
passwords
This is something I get asked about a lot, as it can be quite confusing for beginners. Much of the time, the roleplay host/owner would like a way to tell if you have read the rules and or introduction to make sure you didn't just skip to the forms.
One of the best ways is to insert a password into the rules or introduction, which can be anywhere: in the middle of a paragraph, in between rules, etc. Usually it will be something like this:
The Koala tribe gets their water from a nearby river called the O'Hala River. Password: swift.
Sometimes it says something like password: your favorite TV show, so everyone's password is different. Some hosts even like to change the password occasionally to make sure people aren't just reading off someone else's form for the password.
All you need to worry about is making sure you've read all the rules and information pages thoroughly and you'll be able to enter the password in your form, which is explained in the third chapter. The next chapter is how to create a well formed and believable original character.
