“Lilah!” My little sister Tally yelled and jumped on my bed.
I groan, “No, five more minutes.” I pull the covers back over my head.
“No!” She giggles. “Mommy said to wake you up for work!”
That’s right. I start the early shift at Tim Horton’s today.
“Tally can you get off my bed?” I ask.
“Kay.” She says and runs out of my room.
I out on my work uniform and ready. I don’t really have much to do since I don’t wear any makeup and I don’t use any products for my hair other than shampoo and conditioner.
I’m not much of a girly girl. I don’t jump for joy over new mascara, I don’t squeal when I see new eye shadow colors. I don’t own a single thing that has to do with makeup.
I go downstairs to make some breakfast. My other sister Grace is in the kitchen sitting at the table, her eyes are glued to her phone, probably texting.
“Hey Gracie.” I say, using her nickname.
“Hey Lilah.” She puts her phone the back pocket of her short shorts and goes over to the fridge and pulls out a carton of orange juice.
Grace and I are pretty different. She likes to wear mascara and eye shadow, she likes short shorts and skirts. She’s a big girly girl.
“Hey Lil, can you drop me off at the beach on your way to work?” She asks.
“The beach? It’s already warm enough for that?” I say.
“Yeah, it’s like 35 degrees.” She says.
“Huh. Ya sure, I’ll drive you.” Surprisingly it’s actually hot out. It’s funny how that here in Canada, it can be super cold in the winter but boiling in the summer. Hah, silly Canadian stereotypes.
“Pft, looks like the igloos are gonna melt.” I laugh.
Grace laughs too. “Better get the polar bears into the garage.”
We both agree that it’s so annoying that people think that because Canada’s so cold, we live in igloos. It's really annoying, but sometimes it can be run to make fun of the stereotypes.
After breakfast I drop Grace off at the beach and drive to work. I’m ten minutes early, so I have a little extra time before my shift starts.
I sit in the back room and take out my iPod. I turn it on shuffle. What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction comes on. Ugh, I thought I got all of my sister’s music off of my iPod. Hmm, I’ve never actually listened to their music, I’ve heard of them before but I didn’t really check out any of their songs because I’m not into boybands.
Their actually not that bad. I wouldn’t go to their concert, but they’re okay.
“Lilah!” Marina, my boss calls. “Shift starts in two!”
“Yep, coming!” I call back.
--
My shift’s almost over, it seems like so long ago that I got here! Time certainly doesn’t fly when you’re at work.
I two teenage girls sit at a table close to the counter, so I can hear their whole conversation. Great. Can you sense my sarcasm there?
“And, their in Toronto for the concert!” One of the girls say.
“Lucky! I’ve always wanted to go to a One Direction concert!” The other whines.
Oh no, what a tragedy. I roll my eyes and go get a cup of coffee for a customer. I'm putting the sugar with the coffee when I catch one of the girls giving me a dirty look.
"Ugh, and seriously, she doesn't even have any makeup on." She says rudely to her friend.
I have ears you know... Not that it bothers me though. I don't wear any makeup but I don't care what people think of that, it's not like i'm gonna change for anybody just because they don't like my appearence.
I walk to where the costumer is and hand her the coffee, "Here's your coffee, have a nice day."
"Thank you, you too." She replies in a British accent.
Ah, visiting polar bear land I see - wait, did I actually just say polar bear land.
I'm a weirdo.

After my shift I drive back home and change out of my work clothes. Grabbing my book and my ipod I plop down on my bed.
" 'Cause it's nine in the afternoon
And your eyes are the size of the moon
You could, 'cause you can, so you do
We're feeling so good, just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afternoon"
Deciding I need some tea, I go downstairs singing along to Panic! At The Disco.
"We're feeling so good, just the way that we do
When it's nine in the afterno-"
"LILAH!'
"AH!" I jump, causing me to spill burning hot tea on myself.
"Ouch ouch ouch - Asdfghjkl HOT TEA!"
I turn around and Gracie was standing behind me.
"You know you're singing pretty loudly, right?" She says.
"Weren't you supposed to be at the beach? And no, I didn't realize I was singing that loudly."
"Lovely singing voice by the way." She says sarcastically with a smirk.
"Where did that sassiness come from?" I ask.
"Learned from the best." Gracie says with a wink and heads up to her room. I laugh.
"Hey you never answered my question!" I call.
"It's raining!" She calls back.
I turn my head to the window and notice it's pouring rain outside, when did that get here?
