Amber hugged the parcel tightly to her chest as she walked back home with her father that evening. Clive was looking around the street at the couples that were holding hands and Amber knew how lost he felt without her mother.

Even though Clive never talked about Nathalie he missed her a lot. He had never recovered from the fact that she was gone. He had so many dreams to complete with her and Amber but it would never happen.

"Dad what was mom like?" Amber whispered looking down at her shoes.

"She was a sweet, polite, kind and gorgeous woman. She loved you and me more than anything." A half smile formed on Clive's lips.

"Then why did she leave us? Why did she not take us with her? I miss her so much. Everyone has their mothers hugging them, cooking for them, dropping them to school, being there when their back and I don't even remember her smile." Amber felt tears pricking her eyes.

Clive took Amber's hand and led her to a nearby bench

Clive took Amber's hand and led her to a nearby bench. They both sat down and Amber rested her head on her father's shoulder as she let the tears escape. Clive gave her a few minutes to let the sorrow out before wiping away her tears and hugging her.

"I don't know myself. I miss her too but I couldn't help it. She said she wanted to protect us. I'm sure she did it for our own good." Clive tucked a loose stand of Amber's hair behind her ear.

"We're already in such a miserable state. If she was there we would at least have someone else helping around. We would have been a family." Amber forced the urge to yell.

"We would be in a way worse state. There are so many who don't even get to eat a little. There are so many who are sitting on the sidewalks because they don't have a home. There are so many children don't have parents or their parents have abandoned them.Yet they are happy." Clive turned his attention back to the couples on the street.

Amber felt guilty for only thinking about herself. Like her dad had said they could have been in a worst state. She could have lost both her parents. She could have had no place to shelter herself when it rained. She could have been crying of hunger. Yet she had it all even it was not what she expected.

"I'm sorry. I was not myself when I said all those things." Amber whispered.

"It's fine. This is what human beings are for. We all make mistakes. It's a normal thing." Clive turned to Amber with a smile.

Amber reached into her backpack and removed the box that contained the chocolate cake. She opened it and cut it into two equal shares with the plastic spoon before handing one to her father and biting into the other one herself.

"Where was mom from? Do you know anything about her family?" Amber asked while taking her second bite.

"I know nothing about her family other than she is from London. She never spoke about them for some reason and I didn't want to ask.We were supposed to meet her parents someday but she left before that." Clive licked some cream off his thumb.

"Do you think she got married? She could have kids too." Amber asked curiously.

"Never. She loved us both so much. I'm sure she still remembers us." Clive shook his head.

" I hope she is smiling right now. I wish I could just hug her once. I want to feel what it is like to have your mother hug you." Amber crossed her legs and started down at her shoes.

"Trust me that feeling is amazing. It is one of the best feelings in the world." Clive laughed.

Amber removed a tissue from the box and handed it to her father. Clive wiped his hands and mouth with the tissue before giving it back to Amber who threw it in a nearby dustbin along with the box. She gave him her water bottle and he drank half of the water it in one gulp before handing it back to her.

"So how did the wedding go?" Amber asked changing the topic.

"It was good. They were such a happy couple who were deep in love." Clive sighted.

"How about we go now? You need some sleep and so do I." Amber asked knowing what her father was thinking.

They both got up and started towards their house. The sun was setting and the last birds were flying towards their nest. Some shop nearby was playing a melodious tune and Amber hummed along.

Clive couldn't help but smile as he looked at his happy daughter. He wanted her to meet her mother some day and for that he could do anything. After all that she was going through she deserved it.
