It was hard to walk home that afternoon. My feet seemed glue to the ground as gravity did it's best to hold me in place. Even the sun tried heating me to the point I was nothing but a melted mess. But my heart had already shattered, against my will of course. Although it's remains looked like nothing left than crumbs from a cookie, I felt as though it was the weight of two trucks, sinking down to my stomach.
And it sucked balls.
Vanessa continued to chat away effortlessly about the few "dates" she scored, completely boring the boys to death with her girlish excitement. But they managed to stay void of expression as their minds wondered off, the fantasies floating from Vanessa's mouth bouncing in every way but theirs.
"Hey, you are way to quiet. You still upset about yesterday?" Hector asked, and although his voice came out rough and gravelled, it was soft, welcoming.
Alluring for many.
I forced my eyes to fall into his, trying my best to curl the tips of my lips up into a genuine smile. But instead words flowed like a river.
"Ha, please fighting with Dad is nothing compared to meeting your mate and finding out he's human. Which is good I mean I never wanted a m-"
"You met your mate?" Vanessa almost shrieked, but her eyes widened instead as the word sinked it's way into her perfectly shaped head. I stopped dead, my gaze shifting from my friends. They too held wide eyed expressions, their jaws dropping to the floor as their foreheads raised.
I fight the urge to blurt every single thought from my mind, to allow them to me a river and catch my words. They were my friends, we had grown up together since birth. I could easily tell them, to spill my guts out and wait for them to give me advice.
But how would they know what to do? Apart from Tyler, they didn't have mates. And how could they know what to do when your mate is a human. It was like asking someone how to turn into a rock.
"This is great, I mean we have an extra Alpha now and we can buil-" Vanessa squealed, her hands clasping together as she skipped over to stand next to me.
"Shut up, can't you see she's not happy about this," Hector says, a low growl escaping causing Vanessa to halt immediately. Her eyes shifted across me, noticing how my head hang low, as my arms were tightly crossed over my chest and the slight glitter in my eyes from the tears threatening to appear. Her lips shut immediately as her hands brought me into an embrace, soon joined by Tyler and Hector.
They didn't even know what it was about, why would they hug me?
"What's up?" Tyler asked, probably remembering how he felt when he first laid eyes on his mate.
With a long sigh, I explained to them everything about Xavier. I repeated the words that he said but I never mentioned that he was a human. And the more words flowed out of my mouth, the tighter the embrace became. The bigger the lump in my throat grew.
"Damn, he's such an asshole. What kind of wolf goes around pushing around humans?" Hector had said.
"I'm gonna F**ck'n smash him." Tyler had growled.
"I'm so sorry." Vanessa whispered, "but why did he target you, shouldn't the mate bond stop him from threatening you?"
I hated how genuinely sorry she looked, the way her features softened as she stared into my eyes. I didn't deserve such a friend like this. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I whispered three measly words.
"I don't know."
We continued along our path back home, a continuous streak of curse words and insults flowed from their mouths in an attempt to make me feel better, but with every hurtful comment I felt a brick hit my face. But I didn't tell them to stop, why would I?
